Raising a Puppy: Feeding Guidelines for the First Ten Months
Understanding Puppy Nutrition
Puppies grow at a rapid pace, and their nutritional needs are significantly different from those of adult dogs. High-quality protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals are crucial for their development. It's important to choose a puppy-specific formula that meets these needs.
Newborn to Two Weeks
During the first two weeks of life, puppies rely solely on their mother's milk for nutrition. If the mother is unavailable, a high-quality puppy milk replacer can be used. Puppies should be fed every two to four hours.
Three to Four Weeks
At three to four weeks, puppies can start to transition to solid food. Begin by moistening dry puppy food with warm water to create a gruel-like consistency. Gradually increase the amount of solid food and decrease the frequency of feedings.
Five to Eight Weeks
By five weeks, puppies should be eating solid food. Continue to feed them a high-quality puppy formula three to four times a day. Ensure they have access to fresh water at all times.
Nine to Twelve Weeks
At this stage, puppies require about four feedings a day. Their diet should still consist of puppy-specific food to support their growth. Monitor their weight and adjust portion sizes accordingly.
