Stress is a nonspecific, systemic response that occurs in the body when it is subjected to intense stimuli from various factors. Essentially, stress is a physiological response designed to maintain normal bodily functions. It is a crucial component of an animal's adaptive and protective mechanisms, as it enhances the body's defense capabilities and aids in maintaining homeostasis in a changing environment.

What are some common stressors?

Damagecausing stressors include tail docking, castration, burns, frostbite, poisoning, infections, and ionizing radiation, all of which are accompanied by collective injury and inflammatory responses.

Nondamage stressors encompass overexertion, thirst and hunger, noise, weaning, severe pain, sudden fear, vaccinations, extreme temperatures, reduced living space, and longdistance transportation.

What changes occur in an animal's body under stress?

Upon encountering a stressor, an animal's metabolic rate increases, leading to elevated blood glucose and free fatty acids, increased protein breakdown, and higher urinary nitrogen excretion. Animals that remain in a state of stress for extended periods may experience excessive nutrient consumption, resulting in weight loss, anemia, decreased immunity, and difficulty in wound healing. Additionally, the heart rate may increase, and the heart's contractility may strengthen. In severe cases, animals may suffer from gastric mucosal bleeding and edema. It is clear that prolonged stress is detrimental to an animal's growth and development.

Stress responses are present in all aspects of life, and it is essential to be vigilant and take effective measures to minimize or avoid stress. It is our responsibility as pet owners to ensure that our beloved pets grow up happy and healthy.
