Dogs' Impulsive Walks: Understanding the Why and How
Today, I'll share with you some essential tips on training your dog to walk on a leash with proper etiquette.
Many dogs dash forward with excitement, which is why it's crucial to keep their focus on you. You need to make it clear that this behavior is not acceptable, and when it occurs, it should be met with a corresponding punishment. Conversely, when your dog listens well, it's important to reward them accordingly. Just imagine the scene with a large dog doing this – it can be quite a sight!
Training Techniques:
If your dog tends to pull ahead, the leash will suddenly become taut. This is when you must stand your ground, call out its name loudly, and command it to sit still. Maintain a firm and steady gaze to communicate your message. It's also helpful to have some treats on hand to reward your dog for its obedience.
Repeat this training process consistently, and you'll eventually see great results in their compliance.
It's important not to chase after your dog or run alongside it, as this might reinforce the idea that you're encouraging play. If you find it challenging to control your dog initially, carry a rolledup newspaper as a deterrent. Use it to gently swat at your dog, but not to harm it. The loud noise from the newspaper can be startling enough to deter your dog, making it clear that disobedience will lead to consequences.
This method is effective because the newspaper, when rolled into a stick, is unlikely to cause any real pain to your dog. However, the noise it makes can instill fear, teaching your dog that ignoring commands will result in punishment.
