Part 1: Reasons Why Dogs May Be Underweight

1. Dietary Issues

Dogs that do not consume enough food daily, or those that are fed lowquality dog food, often suffer from malnutrition, leading to a thin physique. Some dogs are particularly picky eaters, consuming very little each day, which is also a common cause of malnutrition.

2. Parasite Infections

Dogs with internal parasites may not gain weight despite eating a lot, as the parasites consume their nutrients. Many intestinal parasites can also disrupt the dog's digestive system, causing symptoms like diarrhea, soft stools, blood in the feces, and vomiting, which can impair their ability to absorb nutrients.

3. Digestive and Absorption Issues

Chronic intestinal diseases caused by longterm improper diet or irregular feeding can affect a dog's absorption capabilities. When the digestive system cannot properly digest and absorb nutrients from food, it becomes difficult for the nutrients to be utilized effectively.

4. Increased Metabolism

High energy expenditure due to viral infections, pregnancy and childbirth in dogs, or chronic diseases can lead to increased metabolism, causing the body to consume nutrients faster than they can be replenished, resulting in weight loss.

Part 2: What to Do If Your Dog Is Too Thin

1. Regular Deworming

It is recommended to deworm dogs starting at around 2 months of age, as they often play outside and are at a higher risk of parasite infections. A deworming routine of once every 12 months is suggested to prevent parasites from affecting nutrient absorption.

2. Nutritional Supplementation

Besides commercial dog food, it's important to supplement their diet with other nutritious foods. You can add cooked meats like beef or chicken breast to their meals, as well as goat's milk or premade raw boneless meat. Additionally, feeding probiotics for a period can help regulate the digestive system and improve nutrient absorption.

3. Increase Feeding Frequency and Quantity

For dogs with poor digestion, it's best to feed them small, frequent meals. Adjust the feeding schedule from once or twice a day to three times a day, or increase each meal by 10% to ensure they receive adequate nutrition. It's also important to encourage exercise to strengthen their overall health and improve their appetite.

If dietary adjustments and deworming do not resolve the issue of your dog's thinness, consider potential liver function problems, intestinal diseases, or congenital malabsorption issues. It's advisable to consult a veterinarian to identify the specific cause and receive appropriate treatment.
