How to Help Your Dog Overcome Car Sickness?

① Keep the Windows Open for Fresh Air

Allowing air to circulate in the car can be a great relief for your dog. The fresh air helps to counteract the potent smells inside the vehicle, which can be a major trigger for car sickness. Even if these odors are not overpowering to you, they can be quite overwhelming for your furry friend. Opening the windows can significantly alleviate your dog's discomfort.

② Bring Along Familiar Toys

Many dogs may suffer from car sickness due to anxiety or stress. Placing some of your dog's favorite toys in the car can help soothe their nerves. Familiar scents and objects can provide a sense of comfort. Additionally, regularly taking your dog on car rides can help them get accustomed to the sensation of being in a vehicle.

③ Avoid Feeding Your Dog for Half a Day Before Traveling

Overeating before a trip can exacerbate car sickness in dogs. To mitigate this, try not to feed your dog a heavy meal within half a day of your journey. However, it's still important to provide your dog with water, as they may need to stay hydrated, especially in a stuffy car environment.

④ Drive Smoothly

Aggressive driving, with sudden stops and sharp turns, can contribute to your dog's car sickness. Try to maintain a steady and gentle pace to reduce the chances of your dog feeling queasy.

⑤ Take Regular Breaks During Long Rides

Observe how long your dog can comfortably sit in the car without feeling ill. For instance, if your dog starts to vomit after 30 minutes, plan your route to include stops every 25 minutes. Allow your dog to step out and relax for a few minutes before getting back in the car to continue your journey.

PS: Always ensure your dog's safety by using a seatbelt or a secure crate during car rides. Don't forget to bring plastic bags and plenty of tissues for any unexpected messes. As your dog becomes more accustomed to car rides, their car sickness should gradually diminish.
