During Exercise

Whether it's a brisk run or a leisurely stroll, dog owners should always carry a portable water bowl. These convenient bowls are crucial for our furry friends, as they should be encouraged to drink water at regular intervals during their activity. It's important to note, however, that they should not be given too much water at once, as this can lead to discomfort in their stomachs.

Establishing a routine of drinking water at set times during exercise can help regulate your dog's body temperature, enhance their water reserves, and alleviate the risk of dehydration during physical activity.

After Exercise

This is the focal point of today's article. Experienced dog owners know that they should not rush to give their pets water immediately after a workout. But why is that?

Firstly, the primary concern after exercise is to allow the dog's body temperature and heart rate to return to normal, as well as to ensure that their tense muscles are fully relaxed. Therefore, it's advisable to gradually reduce the intensity of your dog's exercise as it winds down, rather than stopping abruptly.

What else can you do?

Upon returning home, the first priority is to let your dog rest. If your dog is prone to overheating or is panting heavily after exercise, you can use a damp, warm towel to gently wipe down areas like their paws, armpits, and groin to help cool them down.

Avoid feeding or watering immediately

Humans and dogs share a similar thought process when it comes to rehydrating and refueling after exercise. We both believe that we need to replenish the energy and fluids we've lost.

However, is this really the best approach? After exercise, it's best not to rush to feed or water your dog.

At this point, your dog's appetite may be overwhelming, and indulging in a large meal can not only increase the risk of gastrointestinal issues but also lead to unwanted weight gain. Simply put, your dog's brain is extremely hungry after exercise, so it's crucial to avoid feeding them immediately after physical activity to prevent obesity, bloat, and other health issues.

This applies to water as well. Compared to dog food, water is more likely to cause bloating and other issues, especially for dogs with short noses, who can be at risk when introduced to large quantities of water suddenly. Therefore, it's important not to give your dog water immediately after exercise.
