Don't be disheartened though. This behavior often indicates that your cat has a strong trust in you, the pet parent, and feels secure in its home environment, without the fear of enemies, so it doesn't feel the need to mask its scent.

Another reason could be that your cat is dissatisfied with the current litter. Cats are quite particular about their living conditions, so if the litter is of poor quality or not changed frequently enough, they may also avoid covering their waste.

There's also a more specific situation to consider: if your cat is in heat. Cats can become quite restless during this time, so this is just another task that falls on the owner's shoulders.

If your cat doesn't exhibit these special circumstances and only occasionally forgets to cover its waste due to laziness or another reason, there's no need to worry—it's not a big deal.
