Perfect Guide to Weaning Your Kitten Successfully
Feeding During Weaning
1. When kittens realize that their mother's milk no longer satisfies their hunger, they naturally begin to follow their mother's lead and eat small amounts of solid food. This is a cat's instinctive behavior, and it often makes the weaning process straightforward. You can easily facilitate this by preparing a separate bowl of wet kitten food, which can be soaked in goat's milk or lactosefree milk to help the kittens gradually adjust to the new diet.
2. For some kittens who do not learn to eat from their mother and continue to rely solely on milk, it requires a bit more effort from the cat owner. You can create a nutritious slurry by blending kitten food, goat's milk, lactosefree milk, rice porridge, and bone broth in a blender. Offer this mixture to the kittens. If they are hesitant, gently apply a small amount to their lips to introduce the taste. With patience, they will come to enjoy it.
Weaning Methods
Forced Weaning
When you notice a kitten beginning to eat solid food meant for the mother, it's time to separate the mother and her kittens. To alleviate the stress on the mother's breasts caused by forced weaning, it's advisable to withhold her food for one day. Then, gradually reintroduce her food, starting with a quarter of her usual amount on the second day, then a half on the third, and so on, until the fifth day when she is back to her normal diet. As for the kittens, a sudden switch from milk to solid food can be a shock to their digestive systems, potentially leading to digestive issues. This is a common reaction to a sudden change in diet, and it should resolve with a few days of adjustment.
Gradual Weaning
This method involves gradually separating the mother and her kittens, then reuniting them after feeding. Over time, reduce the frequency of nursing sessions until the kittens are completely weaned.
Batch Weaning
Start by weaning the stronger kittens first, followed by the weaker ones. The rest of the kittens can be weaned according to the previous methods.
