Why Are Cherries Harmful to Dogs?

Cherries aren't just delicious for humans; they can be quite dangerous for our furry friends. The pits, stems, and leaves of cherries contain cyanide, a toxic substance that can lead to poisoning if consumed in large quantities. While the cyanide content in a few cherries might not be enough to cause severe harm, it's still not worth the risk of your dog ingesting them.

The cherry pit is particularly problematic for dogs, as it can cause an intestinal obstruction. This is one of the most common issues dogs face when they eat cherries, and it's a serious matter that can lead to complications.

What About Maraschino Cherries, NucleusFree Cherries, or CherryFlavored Foods?

Maraschino cherries, those sweet treats often found in drinks, are free of pits and sometimes even stems. However, their main issue lies in their high sugar content, which isn't great for a dog's health. Over time, excessive sugar can lead to diabetes or obesity, and in the short term, it can cause gastrointestinal problems.

Nucleusfree and stemfree cherries might be a better option for your pet. Cherries, as a fruit, do contain vitamins A and C, fiber, antioxidants, melatonin, and other potential health benefits.

There are many other fruits and foods that are safer for dogs than cherries and don't require you to remove the pits. For example, apple cores are free of the risks associated with cherry pits, and blueberries are packed with antioxidants. However, these fruits do contain sugar, which can cause stomach upset in dogs. Not every dog can tolerate these fruits, so they shouldn't be given in large quantities. Despite their sugar content, they are still a safer choice than cherries and can offer significant health benefits when given in moderation.

Cherryflavored foods often contain artificial flavors, chemicals, and sugar, which are not friendly to dogs. Even foods that are flavored with natural cherry extracts tend to be very sweet. It's best to stick with real foods that contain beneficial nutrients and are safe for your dog.

What Should You Do If Your Dog Eats Cherries?

Eating just a couple of cherries typically won't cause significant harm, but you should be vigilant for signs of cyanide poisoning. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, bright red gums, dilated pupils, and in severe cases, shock. Dogs may also experience stomach discomfort or diarrhea.

Symptoms of gastrointestinal obstruction include constipation, decreased appetite, and vomiting. After your dog has eaten cherries, keep an eye out for these symptoms for at least 24 hours. If you notice signs of an obstruction, seek veterinary care immediately.

While many fruits are safe and healthy for dogs, cherries, despite their nutritional benefits, can do more harm than good. It's simply not worth the risk. There are plenty of other foods that are better choices for your dog's health.
