Understanding the Causes of Canine Gastric Torsion

Canine gastric torsion, also known as bloat, can be triggered by a combination of factors. These include eating infrequently but in large, rapid amounts, as well as consuming highfat foods.

Symptoms of Canine Gastric Torsion

1. Arching the Back: A common sign that something is amiss.

2. Preference for Uphill Movement: Dogs with gastric torsion may show a reluctance to go downhill.

3. Lying on Their Stomach: They may prefer this position, and their abdominal wall may appear tense.

4. Alternating Between Crouching and Lying Down: This behavior is often accompanied by anxiety and restlessness.

5. Curling Up and Shivering: This can be a sign of distress, along with dry heaving and abdominal pain. If left untreated, it can lead to shock, necrosis of the stomach wall, and ultimately, death.

Medical Examination

Diagnosis typically requires an Xray, which can reveal a displaced pylorus. It's crucial to seek immediate veterinary care if gastric torsion is suspected, as delayed treatment can result in a high mortality rate.
