Section 1: What to Do When a Rabbit Gets Dirty

Rabbits are naturally quite clean, often grooming themselves by licking their fur. As a result, they typically don't get too dirty. It's advisable for pet owners to take their rabbits out for playtime on clean grass to prevent them from getting excessively soiled. If your rabbit does get a bit dirty but not too bad, you can skip the bath. Instead, simply use a clean towel dampened with warm water to wipe them clean. However, maintaining a clean indoor environment is key, as rabbits usually stay clean when living in a tidy space.

In cases where bathing is unavoidable, it's crucial to protect the rabbit's ears from getting wet. Rabbits' ears can easily become inflamed when damp, leading to infections. After a bath, dry your rabbit's fur immediately to prevent them from catching a cold. Keep in mind that rabbits under one year old should not be bathed, and even older rabbits should not be bathed too frequently.

Here are some important considerations when bathing your pet rabbit:

1. Use only rabbitspecific shampoos for bathing. Human shampoos can be very harsh on their delicate skin. If rabbit shampoo isn't available, simply use water.

2. The water temperature for bathing should be slightly warmer than your rabbit's body temperature, which is a few degrees higher than yours. Ensure the water is wellregulated to avoid causing your rabbit to catch a cold or experience stress.

3. If you use shampoo, make sure to rinse it thoroughly to prevent any residue from being ingested, which could lead to poisoning.

4. After bathing, immediately toweldry your rabbit and use a hairdryer to ensure their fur is completely dry.

5. Frequent bathing can increase the risk of illness and damage your rabbit's skin's protective layer. It's best to avoid frequent baths, aiming for every 23 months.

OxyPet Doctor's Tip: When bathing your rabbit, choose a day with pleasant weather and warm sunshine to prevent them from catching a cold. Avoid bathing rabbits during winter or in cold weather to prevent severe hypothermia and potential death.
