The ears are a crucial bridge for dogs to communicate with the outside world. If a dog's ears become ill and are not treated promptly, it can lead to hearing loss, significantly affecting their normal life.

Golden Retrievers often suffer from pus in their ears, which is typically a sign of suppurative infection. Possible causes include ear mites, bacterial infections, trauma, allergies, and fungal infections. To identify the cause and provide targeted treatment, it's advisable to take your pet to a veterinary hospital for an ear canal examination and other relevant tests as soon as possible.

In the event that you cannot visit a vet immediately, here are some steps you can follow for home treatment:

1. Local Treatment

(1) Gently take a small amount of medical cotton ball, roll it into a ball on a pair of tweezers, and dip it in a suitable amount of Er Fen Fen (Pet Ear Care Solution). Wipe the pus on the outer ear repeatedly. Be careful not to apply too much pressure to avoid damaging the ear canal mucosa.

(2) After cleaning, use the same method to apply a suitable amount of Er Di Ke (Fluoroquinolone Metronidazole Ear Drops) to the dog's outer ear canal. This ear drop has dual antibacterial effects and can alleviate local inflammation in the ear canal.

PS: Once the pus in the Golden Retriever's ears decreases, you can directly drop the ear care solution and ear drops into the ears. This allows the medication to reach deeper parts of the ear canal without pushing the inflammatory factors in.

Specific steps:

① Keep the dog still, then drop a suitable amount of ear care solution into its ear;

② Gently massage the ear for 1 to 2 minutes to soften the earwax thoroughly;

③ Release the dog, allowing it to shake out the ear care solution and earwax on its own;

④ Use tweezers to hold a medical cotton ball and wipe the ear clean;

⑤ After cleaning, drop 2 to 3 drops of Fluoroquinolone Metronidazole Ear Drops into the dog's ear;

⑥ Gently massage the base of the ear to distribute the medication evenly;

⑦ Wipe away any excess ear care solution with a cotton ball to keep the ear canal dry.

2. Oral Antimicrobial Medication

Due to the unique structure of a dog's ear canal, local treatment may not reach the deeper parts. Therefore, to control the infection more comprehensively, oral or injectable antimicrobial medications are needed in conjunction with local treatment.

At home, you can choose some oral broadspectrum antibiotics, such as:

(1) Asuoda (Cefahydrate Tablets): Used primarily for infections caused by Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Pneumococcus, including respiratory, skin and soft tissue, oral, and gastrointestinal infections, as well as otitis media.

(2) Kenojia (Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium): Suitable for lower respiratory tract infections, otitis media, sinusitis, and other conditions caused by sensitive bacteria such as hemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis.

Important Notes:

1. Avoid scratching: Put an Elizabethan collar on the Golden Retriever to prevent it from excessively scratching or shaking its affected ear, which can lead to ear damage and worsen the infection.

2. Keep the ears dry: Keep a close eye on the Golden Retriever's ear canal condition. If pus is found, it should be wiped dry immediately.

3. Regular deworming: Many dogs may develop otitis due to ear mites. Therefore, it's important to deworm your dog regularly. Using Dipai (Pyriproxyfen Moxyclotinone Drop) can effectively kill ear mites and various internal and external parasites.

If the Golden Retriever's ear discharge and odor do not improve significantly after a week of home treatment, it is advisable to seek medical treatment promptly to avoid the condition from worsening or becoming chronic.
