Doggy fungal skin diseases are typically caused by infections from fungi such as Microsporum canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Trichophyton verrucosum. These types of fungi are the same as those that cause athlete's foot, which means they can not only spread between pets but also potentially infect humans!

When dogs contract fungal skin diseases, they often exhibit symptoms like dry skin, round scabs, hair loss, and a clear distinction from healthy skin around the affected area. There's usually a lot of dandruff, severe itching, and the skin may appear red.

Most dogs carry fungi on their bodies, but they are protected by a layer of oil that usually prevents clinical symptoms. However, when a dog's immune system weakens, the skin gets damaged, or they are bathed too frequently, leading to excessive loss of oils, fungi can take advantage of this and cause skin infections.

When humans are infected with fungal skin diseases from dogs, they may develop small red bumps that gradually enlarge into circular or elliptical rashes. These rashes have a few flakes around them, clear borders, and can be extremely itchy.

Who is more susceptible to being infected by dogs?

1. Children

2. The elderly

3. Individuals with low immunity

These groups have weaker skin resistance, so they are more prone to infection after direct or indirect contact with large amounts of fungi.

Transmission routes:

● Direct contact with the skin of an infected dog, especially the lesion areas, and failing to wash hands and disinfect after contact;

● Contact with the dog's common items, such as beds, sofas, cushions, etc., which may contain fungal spores and other contaminants from the dog's dander and fur.

How to treat for yourself and your dog?

● For yourself:

Apply miconazole nitrate cream, ketoconazole cream, or terbinafine cream to the affected area. Make sure to wash your hands and disinfect after touching the dog, and consider isolating the dog until it recovers.

● For the dog:

Topically: Use Piptop skin spray along with Dasatin (ketоконазол cream). First, use physiological saline to moisten the dandruff and scabs, then remove the scabs and apply iodine tincture for disinfection.

Orally: Adivit (vitamin B complex solution) can promote skin healing and enhance the immune system of the skin and mucous membranes. For larger infections, oral or injectable itraconazole can be taken once a day for a week, then stop for a week (itraconazole should not be taken longterm as it can damage the liver; it is not recommended for puppies or dogs with liver dysfunction!)

Remember: During treatment, the dog should wear an Elizabethan collar to prevent it from licking the affected area, which could worsen the condition and spread the bacteria.

Take precautions to prevent infection!

1. Keep the environment clean and regularly disinfect the dog's living items (like food and water bowls, beds, toys) and areas in your home (floors, sofas, carpets);

2. Avoid bathing your dog too frequently; even in summer, no more than once a week;

3. Use only petspecific shampoos when bathing your dog;

4. Pay attention to a balanced diet and give your dog some fruits and vegetables to supplement vitamins;

5. Regularly expose your dog to sunlight, as UV rays can act as a杀菌 agent;

6. Keep your dog away from other animals with skin diseases;

7. Regularly comb your dog's fur and check their skin for early detection and treatment.

Compared to other types of skin diseases, diagnosing and treating fungal infections in dogs is generally easier. However, it's crucial to adhere to the medication regimen to avoid recurrence.
