Ear infections are a common health issue in pet dogs, often leading to symptoms like redness, pain, unpleasant odors, and increased discharge. In severe cases, pus may even leak from the ears. But what should you do if your furry friend's ears are inflamed and oozing pus? What kind of antiinflammatory medication is best? Let's delve into these questions and provide some helpful insights today!

Understanding the Causes of Ear Discharge in Dogs

1. External Factors

Dogs, during their daily adventures, are susceptible to dust, bacteria, parasites (like ear mites), which can lead to ear infections and, subsequently, discharge.

2. Internal Factors

(1) Ear Structure: Dogs' ear canals are Lshaped, which can trap water and pus, creating a breeding ground for bacteria.

(2) Genetic Factors: Certain breeds, such as Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers, are genetically predisposed to ear infections.

(3) Low Immune System: A weakened immune system can make dogs more prone to bacterial and viral invasions, leading to ear infections.

How to Treat Ear Discharge in Dogs

1. Cleaning the Ears

Regularly clean your dog's ears with a petspecific ear cleaning solution like Ear Cleanse (Pet Ear Care Solution). Aim to clean the ears once daily. Use a pair of tweezers and a medical cotton ball to gently wipe the ear flaps with the ear wash, taking care not to apply too much pressure. For more severe infections, consider veterinary ear flushing, which can be done at your vet's office once or twice a week.

2. Applying Ear Medication

After ensuring the ears are dry, apply ear drops such as Ear Drop (Fluoroquinolone + Metronidazole Ear Drops), twice a day. This combination offers dual antibacterial effects and strong inhibitory action against bacteria.

3. Oral Antibiotics

Since topical treatments may not reach the deeper parts of the ear canal, it's advisable to complement them with oral antibiotics. For dogs with ear discharge, consider these petspecific broadspectrum antibiotics:

● Esudata (Cefradine Tablets): This versatile and safe antibiotic has a broad spectrum of activity against Grampositive and some Gramnegative bacteria. It's suitable for treating respiratory, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue infections, osteoarticular infections, and otitis media in dogs and cats.

● Knockout (Amoxicillin + Clavulanate Potassium): A broadspectrum antibiotic that's effective against many Grampositive (like Streptococcus and Streptococcus pneumoniae) and some Gramnegative bacteria (like Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis). It can be used to treat a variety of infections caused by sensitive bacteria, including otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, lung infections, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.

Other antibiotics: Some bacteria may be more sensitive to gentamicin, chloramphenicol, enrofloxacin, and other antibiotics. If possible, it's best to have your dog tested for bacterial sensitivity and resistance at the vet's office to ensure accurate medication. Additionally, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (like Meloxicam) can be considered to alleviate pain and inflammation.

Important Considerations

1. If your dog's ear infection is severe, home remedies may not suffice. It's crucial to seek veterinary care promptly.

2. For secondary infections caused by fungi, ear mites, allergies, and other underlying causes, treatment should be tailored to address the primary issue.

Ear discharge in dogs is a serious matter. Early diagnosis and treatment are key. Avoid using human antibiotics on your dog to prevent liver damage and other complications.
