Hello everyone! I'm your old friend, Dr. Oxygen Pet. Today, we're tackling a problem that many cat owners find quite烦恼: what to do when your cat gets ringworm on its tail?

When you encounter ringworm, don't worry too much. Although it sounds daunting, dealing with it isn't as complicated as it might seem. Below, I'll introduce some simple treatment methods for you.

Firstly, let's understand what ringworm is.

Ringworm is a skin disease caused by fungi, with common types including Microsporum canis and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. This condition not only affects cats but can also be transmitted to humans.

Here are the symptoms of ringworm in cats:

One or more patches of hair loss on the skin, with dry, brittle, and easily broken hair.

Circular or irregular ringlike patches on the skin where hair has fallen out, possibly with scales, red spots, and crusts.

In some cases, there may be itching, leading to cats frequently scratching, rubbing, or biting the affected areas.

Ringworm can not only infect a cat's tail but may also affect the head, limbs, trunk, and other parts of the body. Often, multiple areas are infected simultaneously, and in severe cases, it can spread throughout the body.

Therefore, when you find that your cat's tail has ringworm, it's crucial to thoroughly inspect your cat's entire body to determine if there are any other infected areas.

Symptoms of ringworm in humans:

Red, circular or elliptical rashes with clear edges, with the center possibly having a normal skin color or slightly pale, sometimes with a slight bump around the edge.

The skin surface in the infected area may become dry and develop fine scales or dandruff.

In the early stages or when the condition is severe, there may be small bumps or blisters around the rash.

The infected area usually has a degree of itching, and scratching can lead to skin breakage or the spread of infection.

How to treat ringworm in cats?

Step 1: Isolation and Treatment

To prevent ringworm from spreading to other pets or family members in the home, please isolate the affected cat. At the same time, clean and disinfect all items the cat has come into contact with, including food and water bowls, bedding, and more.

Step 2: Medication

For mild cases of ringworm, topical treatments are generally effective. There are many products on the market specifically for ringworm, such as Dasatin (ketоконазол cream) and Pipette (tincture of terbinafine hydrochloride). These medications can be directly applied to the affected area and effectively inhibit fungal growth. For more severe cases, oral itraconazole or medicated baths may be necessary, and in some cases, veterinary care is required.

Step 3: Nutritional Support

Feeding your cat nutritional supplements like Supervet (solution of vitamin B complex), fish oil, and lecithin tablets can help boost the cat's skin immunity and promote skin repair.

Step 4: Prevent Licking

Since the affected area is the tail, cats are prone to licking it. Therefore, during treatment, it's important to fit the cat with an Elizabethan collar to prevent the spread of bacteria through the cat's saliva to other areas.

Step 5: Be Patient and Wait for Recovery

The treatment process for ringworm can last for several weeks or even months, depending on the severity of the infection and the cat's overall health. During this time, you'll need to be patient, regularly check for improvements in your cat's symptoms, and continue with the treatment.

Lastly, I'd like to remind all cat owners that prevention is always better than cure. Keeping your cat's body clean and regularly checking their skin can effectively prevent ringworm. Additionally, try to minimize contact with stray cats or cats of unknown health status to reduce the risk of infection.
