Dear dog lovers, if you notice that your furry friend has an excessive amount of eye boogers, take a deep breath and don't rush to conclusions. This doesn't always indicate illness. Overusing medication can not only fail to resolve the issue but may also lead to unwanted side effects. Let's delve into the common reasons behind excessive eye boogers in dogs and discuss effective solutions, providing you with a clear path to address the issue.

Understanding the Causes of Excessive Eye Boogers in Dogs

Before considering medication for your dog's eye boogers, it's crucial to understand the underlying causes. Here are some common reasons for the buildup of eye boogers in our canine companions:

1. Nonpathological Causes

● Poor Diet: Regularly consuming greasy, highsodium, highsugar, or food with excessive additives can burden your dog's metabolism, leading to internal heat, dry eyes, excessive eye boogers, tear stains, bad breath, and constipation.

● Foreign Body Irritation: Excessive dust, hair, and seeds in the air can irritate a dog's eyes, causing discomfort and an increase in secretions.

● Genetic Factors: Due to breed and genetic differences, some dogs may have underdeveloped nasolacrimal ducts, large curves, or double eyelashes, resulting in more eye secretions.

2. Pathological Causes

● Bacterial Infection: Injuries, foreign body irritation, or poor environmental conditions can lead to bacterial eye infections, causing conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis, and symptoms like increased eye secretions, redness, and difficulty opening the eyes.

● Viral Infection: When dogs are infected with canine distemper or canine cough, they may exhibit increased nasal and ocular secretions, along with symptoms like coughing, decreased appetite, and listlessness. In such cases, immediate veterinary attention is necessary.

Effective Treatments for Excessive Eye Boogers

Before administering any medication, it's important to assess your dog's overall eye health. If there are no other symptoms besides excessive eye boogers, consider the following steps:

1. Gently wipe around your dog's eyes using a cotton ball or pad soaked in physiological saline to remove eye boogers, dust, and other debris.

2. Feed your dog a light, easily digestible diet, encourage plenty of water intake, and offer some cooling fruits and vegetables like cabbage, cucumber, winter melon, pear, and apple.

3. Use Shan Jing (Jin Yin Hua Eye Wash) eye drops to alleviate dryness and discomfort, and reduce tear and booger production.

4. Administer Ka Wan Ning (Qing Wen Bai Du Tablets), a petspecific cooling medicine containing traditional Chinese herbal ingredients like gypsum, rehmannia, water buffalo horn, coptis, and gardenia, to effectively alleviate symptoms of internal heat and inflammation.

For dogs with a large amount of yellow or green puslike eye boogers, along with redness, excessive tearing, and difficulty opening their eyes, first rinse the eyes with physiological saline. Then, use Bai Lang Ming (Neomycin Sulfate Eye Drops) to observe the situation for 1 to 3 days. If symptoms persist, seek veterinary care promptly.
