As the famous "walking dandelion" in the pet world, cats are known for shedding their fur daily, and the amount can be quite substantial. However, if pet owners notice a sudden bald patch on their cat, it's time to sound the alarm. This could be indicative of a variety of issues. Today, let's delve into the common reasons behind a bald patch on a cat and how to address them effectively.

What Causes a Bald Patch on a Cat?

• Malnutrition: A deficiency in essential nutrients like proteins, vitamins, and minerals can lead to severe hair loss across the body.

• Skin Diseases: Conditions such as fungal infections (ringworm), mite infestations, or bacterial infections can lead to skin issues.

• Allergies: Food allergies, environmental allergies (such as pollen, dust mites), and other allergens can trigger hair loss.

• Endocrine Disorders: Abnormalities in thyroid function or adrenal diseases can also cause hair loss.

• Psychological Factors: Stress or anxiety can lead to excessive grooming or biting, resulting in severe hair loss in certain areas.

How to Handle a Bald Patch on a Cat?

Many pet owners become anxious upon seeing their cat's bald patch, often rushing to buy various medications and supplements without proper guidance, only to waste money and see no improvement. Here are some steps to consider for a scientific approach:

1. Observe the Symptoms: Check if the bald patch is accompanied by symptoms like redness, itching, dandruff, or scabs. If there are no other issues, the hair loss might be due to psychological factors or endocrine disorders. In such cases, it's advisable to monitor the situation at home and improve the cat's living environment, play with it more, and reduce its stress.

2. Use an Elizabethan Collar: To prevent the cat from licking the affected area and spreading the hair loss, consider fitting it with a cone and trimming its nails.

3. Seek Immediate Treatment: If the bald patch shows signs of dandruff, redness, or scabs, use a Wood's lamp to check for fungal infections. Tinea in cats, caused by Microsporum canis, will glow green under the Wood's lamp. Treat with medicated shampoos or ointments like Dasatin (ketоконазол cream) or Pipette (terbinafine hydrochloride spray). If it's not a fungal infection, clean the area with iodine and apply antibiotic ointments such as Fuscin (zinc oxide ointment), erythromycin ointment, or mupirocin ointment.

4. Enhance Nutrition: Malnutrition can exacerbate hair loss, so consider supplementing your cat's diet with nutrients that promote hair growth and skin health.

   (1) Increase Protein Intake: Eggs, fish, and meats are excellent sources of highquality protein.

   (2) Supplement Vitamins and Minerals: Add leafy greens, fruits, and animal organs to your cat's diet, which are rich in vitamins and minerals.

   (3) Use Professional Nutritional Supplements: Products like fish oil, lecithin, and Supervit (multivitamin solution) can improve your cat's hair quality.

5. Seek Professional Help: If the skin condition does not improve after treatment, it's crucial to visit a veterinarian for a skin scrape test to determine the cause and receive targeted treatment.
