What to Do if You Purchase a Dog with Ringworm? What Effective Ointment Should You Use for Canine Ringworm? Ringworm is a common skin condition that not only affects dogs and cats but can also be transmitted to humans. If you find yourself with a dog that has ringworm or if your pet suddenly develops the infection, take heart. Treating this skin disorder is actually quite straightforward.

Ringworm is essentially a fungal infection that causes skin issues, such as Microsporum canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Trichophyton verrucosum, with over 70% of cases being caused by Microsporum canis.

Dogs with ringworm often exhibit clusters of hair loss or broken hair, along with itchy skin, scabs, and dry, gray scales, forming circular or irregular patches. At home, you can use a Wood's lamp to inspect the affected areas. If there's a distinct fluorescence reaction on the skin where hair has fallen out, it's a strong indication of canine ringworm.

What Ointment Works Best for Canine Ringworm?

When treating ringworm in dogs, there are two main considerations:

1. Antifungal Medications

Since ringworm is caused by a fungal infection, it's essential to use antifungal treatments containing ingredients like ketoconazole, miconazole, or terbinafine hydrochloride. These broadspectrum antifungal drugs are effective against various types of skin fungal infections.

If the infection is widespread, it's advisable to complement the treatment with oral itraconazole for a quicker recovery. However, itraconazole can be harsh on the liver, so it's not recommended for puppies, senior dogs, or those with preexisting liver conditions.

2. ImmuneBoosting Medications

It's important to understand that many fungi exist in nature, and every dog carries a certain amount of bacteria and fungi on its skin. Normally, the skin has a natural defense mechanism that keeps these pathogens at bay. However, when the skin is damaged or the immune system is weakened, these fungi can take advantage, leading to symptoms like hair loss, itching, redness, and dandruff.

Therefore, while treating the fungal infection, it's crucial to also boost the dog's skin resistance.

Substances that can enhance a dog's skin resistance include lactoferrin, fish oil, lecithin, and multivitamin B complex. Particularly, vitamin B can promote cell metabolism, reduce skin inflammation, and aid in the prevention and recovery from ringworm.

In summary, treating ringworm in dogs requires a dual approach of medication and immune system enhancement. This combined strategy is key to helping your furry friend recover quickly. Additionally, don't forget to sanitize the environment during treatment, especially the dog's bed and frequent resting areas, to reduce the spread of fungi and prevent recurrence of the condition.
