Among these issues, ringworm is the most prevalent skin condition affecting cats, causing distress for numerous catowning families. So, if your cat has contracted ringworm, what medication is most effective? Are common treatments like iodine tincture, erythromycin ointment, and gentamicin ointment effective? Understanding Ringworm in Cats

Before diving into the medications, let's first understand the nature of ringworm and its causes to better grasp the treatment approach.

Ringworm is a fungal skin disease primarily caused by Microsporum canis and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. When cats are infected, they exhibit several symptoms:

1. Hair Loss: Circular or elliptical patches of hair loss with clear boundaries appear.

2. Itching: Cats frequently scratch the affected areas, leading to redness, swelling, and skin breakdown.

Pipette (Tebuconazole Hydrochloride Spray/Gel): This broadspectrum antifungal medication inhibits the synthesis of fungal cell membranes, effectively killing and inhibiting various fungi.

Daktarin (Ketoconazole Cream): This cream contains multiple effective ingredients, including antifungal and antiinflammatory properties, and has a wide spectrum of antifungal activity, specifically targeting superficial fungal infections of the skin.

These ointments should be applied 12 times daily until symptoms disappear, and then continued for a while to ensure complete cure. If the recovery slows down later, it may indicate that the cat has developed resistance, and you can switch to antifungal ointments containing miconazole or clotrimazole.

For cats with extensive ringworm infections, oral itraconazole is recommended, with a dosage of 510mg/kg, taken once daily. Additionally, use antifungal shampoos weekly for further treatment.
