When your cat frequently exhibits symptoms like scratching its ears and shaking its head, it's not always a sign of ear mites. Haphazardly administering medication can not only delay the golden window of treatment but may also exacerbate the condition!

Beyond ear mites, a variety of other causes can lead to ear itching in cats. The most common in clinical practice include fungal and bacterial infections, ear mite infestations, and secondary infections with bacteria or fungi following ear mite treatment.

How to Distinguish Ear Mites from Other Ear Disorders?

1. Observe the Appearance

Ear mites typically result in a large amount of dark earwax.

Malassezia infections present with brown, greasy earwax.

Bacterial or fungal infections usually cause watery, or white to pale yellow inflammatory discharge.

2. Smell the Discharge

Ear mite infections have a fishy odor.

Malassezia infections produce an acidlike smell.

Ear inflammation discharge has a foul smell.

3. Conduct an Ear Canal Examination

Many ear disorders involve mixed infections. If you're unsure, a direct visit to a veterinary clinic for an ear canal examination can accurately and quickly diagnose the specific cause. This service is generally quite affordable, costing only a few dozen yuan.

Treatment Options:

1. Ear Mites

Selamectin/Ivermectin + Ear Cleanser + Xinerling (Miconazole Nitrate Ointment)

Note: Since ear mites can irritate and damage the ear canal mucosa, opt for a gentle ear cleanser to minimize your cat's discomfort.

Preventative Measures: During treatment, consider deworming every two weeks and later once a month to prevent recurrence.

Environmental Hygiene: Disinfect the environment with hypochlorous acid, and wash the cat's bed, then expose it to sunlight.

2. Malassezia Infection

Ear Cleanser + Miconazole Nitrate Ointment

3. Otitis

Ear Cleanser + Ertike (Fluoroquinolone Nitrofurantoin Ear Drops) + Cefahexime Tablets

Preventative Measures: Otitis often results from earwatering, so keep the ear canals dry.

Seek Immediate Care: Severe otitis can affect hearing. If there's no improvement after treatment, consult a vet promptly.

In general, Malassezia infections and otitis caused by bacteria or fungi can be cured within 714 days of continuous treatment. Ear mites have a lifecycle of three weeks, so treatment should be continued for 2128 days.

Important Considerations:

For any type of ear disorder, it's crucial to fit your cat with an Elizabethan collar during treatment. Allowing your cat to scratch its ears can not only lead to ear damage but also spread bacteria to other parts of the body.
