Strengthening plays a crucial role in enhancing the frequency of behavioral responses. However, to effectively use it for behavior training, it is essential to ensure that the target behavior occurs at least a few times during the training process.

Conversely, if a dog fails to meet the target behavior or cannot directly exhibit a particular action, the frequency of that behavior cannot be increased or reinforced.

Therefore, in such situations, it is necessary to apply the principle of operant conditioning to make the target behavior or a specific behavior appear and be reinforced, which is known as shaping.

What is Behavior Shaping?

Behavior shaping has evolved from Dr. Skinner's theory of operant conditioning and is a method used to shape behaviors that dogs cannot directly perform. It involves a gradual process of reinforcement to help the dog's target behavior come closer and eventually be executed.

Behavior shaping is also known as the method of successive approximations. It involves a series of continuous approaches and reinforcement of the target behavior, ultimately leading the dog to perform the desired behavior and maintain it.

Behavior shaping is widely applied in dog training, such as in the process of teaching a dog to play fetch:

1. Get the dog interested in the toy (ball, rope knot)

2. Teach the dog to chase the toy

3. Teach the dog to pick up the toy to exchange for it

4. Cultivate the dog's interest in playing with a frisbee

5. Teach the dog to catch a frisbee at close range

6. Teach the dog to catch a frisbee at a distance

This series of steps forms a sequence of actions. At the same time, the trainer should be pleased with the dog's progress at each stage and provide timely encouragement. This process is reinforcement, a gradual and stepbystep reinforcement process.

Characteristics of Behavior Shaping

1. Staged Progression

Behavior shaping is generally used for more complex behaviors. It is difficult to achieve the target behavior with just one step.

Therefore, in the process of behavior shaping, the final target behavior is often divided into a series of interconnected阶段性 target behaviors.

For example, the process of teaching a dog to play dead can be broken down into the following阶段性 target behaviors:

1. The dog comes to me

2. The dog sits next to me

3. The dog lies down next to me

4. The dog lies on its side next to me

5. The dog lies completely down next to me

6. The dog lies down and can maintain this position for a while

7. When I leave, the dog remains lying down without moving

The first stage target behavior is the initial behavior, which is the simplest behavior training stage and is easily achievable by the dog.

The final stage target behavior, where the dog lies down and remains still even when I leave, is the ultimate goal of shaping.

1. Gradual Progression

Each stage target behavior in the process of behavior shaping is interconnected and represents a continuous approach. The next target behavior can only be entered after the previous one is completed, forming a series of gradual steps.

For example, when training a dog to retrieve a ball:

1. Take the dog into a quiet room and place a ball in a specific location.

2. The steps of the training shaping process are as follows:

1. The dog looks in the direction of the ball

2. The dog moves closer to the ball

3. The dog touches the ball

4. The dog's mouth touches the ball

5. The dog picks up the ball with its mouth

6. The dog holds the ball in its mouth without dropping it

7. The dog carries the ball back to the person

8. The dog drops the ball in the person's hand

The dog can only look in the direction of the ball before it can move closer to it, and only after moving closer can it touch the ball, and so on. This process gradually leads to the final target behavior.

1. Combining Reinforcement and Extinction Strategies

In the process of behavior shaping, each stage of the approaching target behavior is actually a new behavior.

When the dog reaches a predetermined阶段性 target, the trainer should provide reinforcement.

When the reinforcement reaches a certain level, the trainer will stop reinforcing, which often leads to the disappearance of the behavior. This process is known as extinction.

Of course, the main purpose of stopping reinforcement is to move on to the next阶段性 target behavior.

For example, when the dog first actively touches a frisbee, the owner will be very happy to hug the dog, pull on the rope, and give it food. This is actually a form of reinforcement for the dog, and the dog will continue to exhibit similar behaviors.

In the early stages, the trainer will continue to provide timely responses to reinforce. When the trainer feels that it is no longer necessary to reinforce the simple touch of the frisbee, if the dog continues to touch it, the trainer should not respond. This is because if reinforcement continues, the dog will only perform the simple touch behavior and will no longer exhibit behaviors such as picking up the frisbee or bringing it back to the owner.

When the dog has made several simple touches of the frisbee without receiving any response from the trainer, the dog will lose interest in continuing to perform this behavior.

At times, the trainer may need to use methods to teach the dog to pick up the frisbee. For example, by imitating the behavior of other dogs that are being reinforced for picking up the frisbee. Some dogs may try to learn from other dogs how to pick up the frisbee and receive the trainer's positive response. When the dog picks up the frisbee, the trainer should provide immediate positive reinforcement. This process is the reinforcement of the dog's new behavior of picking up the frisbee.
