One: The Reward Method

This is the simplest and simultaneously the most "joyful" way to train a dog, yet it's often underutilized by many dog owners. The key to this method is straightforward: whenever your dog is in the area where you want it to relieve itself (whether it's in a litter box or outdoors), use treats and verbal praise to reward the behavior. Over time, your dog will learn the "rules." In the later stages, you can transition to just verbal praise.

Two: The Paper Method

Let's illustrate with an example. Place a full sheet of newspaper in the spot where you want your dog to go. When you notice the signs that it's ready to defecate, take it to the newspaper and wait. Once it's done, praise it. Continue to do this, and after several instances, gradually reduce the size of the newspaper to half its original size. After a few more days, shrink it down further until it reaches the appropriate size for picking up waste.

Three: Crate Training

Dogs naturally avoid defecating in their sleeping or eating areas. We can use this instinct to our advantage. By limiting a dog's movement with a crate, we can reduce the chances of accidental urination and teach it to wait. After a certain period, take your dog to a designated elimination area (using a leash if necessary), wait for it to finish, and then allow it to roam freely. This helps establish a connection between eliminating and being able to move around freely. Once the habit is formed, you can gradually discontinue the crate training.

Four: The Wait Method

Dogs tend to defecate after sleeping, eating, and drinking. Therefore, after feeding your dog, take it to the designated elimination area. Go to the same spot each time and wait patiently until it relieves itself. Praise it afterward and take it for a walk. Many owners know that seeing a leash is a signal for playtime, so it's important to establish the order of eliminating before going out. Patience is key here, and you can also incorporate some tricks, as in the fifth method.

Five: The Jogging Method

Exercise can stimulate the intestines, helping food move through the digestive system more quickly. If your dog doesn't feel like going after dinner, take it for a short jog around the block. It's surprisingly effective!

Six: The Clearing and Lure Method

Dogs have two characteristics: they have a keen sense of smell, and they don't like to mark the same spot for elimination but do prefer to return to the same spot. To encourage elimination, place a small amount of your dog's feces on the target area and use an odoreliminating agent to thoroughly clean up any previous scent. Reward your dog after it eliminates, repeat this process, and eventually, it will learn.

Other Important Notes:

1. If you catch your dog making a mistake, firmly say "no" and take it to the correct spot. If you can't stop it in time, don't resort to hitting your dog. Remember, some dogs may hold it in for a day, which can be quite concerning.

2. Patience is crucial. It's a myth that a dog can learn in a week; it's not uncommon for it to take two months. Keep walking your dog and be consistent in forming habits. Force and violence are unlikely to succeed, and many dogs may end up eating their feces as a result.

3. Wait until your puppy is about three months old, when its muscles are strong enough to control its elimination. Reducing accidental urination can help your puppy mature quickly.

4. Older dogs, or those that are overly excited or stressed, may have accidents. Don't blame your dog in these situations.

A childrearing expert once said that parenting is a form of selfimprovement. I believe the same is true for dog ownership. Since you can't communicate with your dog through words, understanding its behavior, practicing patience and trust, and guiding and encouraging it will be a rewarding and enjoyable journey.
