Guide to Raising a Norwegian Forest Cat: Tips & Care
When Caring for a Norwegian Forest Cat, Keep the Following Points in Mind:
1. Establish a consistent feeding routine by using the same food dish and avoid frequent changes. Norwegian Forest Cats are particularly sensitive to changes in their feeding bowls, and they may refuse to eat if the bowl is altered. It's also crucial to keep the bowls clean. You can place newspapers under the bowls for easier cleanup. After each meal, discard any remaining food or store it in a sealed container to maintain freshness for the next feeding.
2. Feed your Norwegian Forest Cat at regular times and in a designated area. Once their feeding schedule is established, it tends to remain consistent. These cats prefer not to eat in noisy or brightly lit environments. If guests are visiting, consider relocating the food bowl to a quieter spot.
3. Norwegian Forest Cats may develop a bad habit of carrying their food outside the bowl or using their claws to pick at it. If you notice this behavior, it's best to correct it early on, especially during their kittenhood.
4. These cats enjoy warm, palatable food. Cold or chilled foods can lead to digestive issues, so aim for food temperatures between 3040 degrees Celsius. Although Norwegian Forest Cats may not drink much water, they need access to plenty of fresh, clean water, which should be changed daily.
5. As longhaired cats, Norwegian Forest Cats require regular grooming to keep their coat healthy and tanglefree. Regular baths are also essential, as they not only keep your cat looking beautiful and clean but also help prevent external parasites and skin conditions.
6. Norwegian Forest Cats are prone to overheating during the summer months. If you suspect your cat is overheating, move them to a wellventilated or shaded area, apply ice packs or use ice water to cool them down. The best course of action is to have your cat examined by a veterinarian.
