Effective Ways to Help a Cat Induce Labor: Tips & Techn

Typically, cats are capable of completing the birthing process on their own. The gestation and delivery cycle for cats generally spans between 58 to 63 days. Under normal circumstances, a cat can manage the entire process of giving birth without any assistance from their owner.

However, there are instances where special care is needed. This might be due to the cat's fragile health or complications during labor, such as dystocia. In such cases, it's best for the owner to be present and offer support. This could involve soothing the cat's nerves, assisting with the cutting of the umbilical cord, wiping the kittens clean, and helping to clear any mucus from their nostrils. If signs of dystocia are detected, it's crucial to seek veterinary care promptly.

How to Assist with Labor:

Beforehand, gather clean, sterilized scissors, cotton thread, tissues, iodine, and an electric heating pad. During labor, gentle massaging of the breasts or pressing on the abdomen can stimulate the release of prolactin and oxytocin, which are estrogenic hormones that help to contract the uterine smooth muscles, aiding in the birthing process. The movement of the fetus through the birth canal also stimulates these muscles, so appropriate stroking and pressing can mimic the fetus's movements. It's important to ensure the mother cat is wellhydrated and wellnourished during labor, which can be achieved by feeding her a small amount of nutritional paste or pet electrolytes.

In cases where the cat is experiencing dystocia and requires assistance, it's essential to determine the specific type of dystocia, as it can be either maternal or fetal, and the treatment approaches differ accordingly. If the fetus is visible but the cat is unable to push it out, the owner can gently pull the fetus out, but with caution. If the cat's pelvis or birth canal is too narrow, immediate veterinary assistance is necessary. If the owner is not experienced, it's advisable to seek professional help.

Once the kittens are born, first remove the placenta from the kitten's head, then clear the mouth and nose of amniotic fluid by gently tilting the kitten upside down to expel the fluid. Be gentle to avoid causing harm. After cleaning, tie the umbilical cord with a piece of cotton thread, leaving about 1/2 cm of cord, and then cut off the rest. Disinfect the area with iodine. Newborn kittens may have low body temperatures, so use the electric heating pad to keep them warm. Ensure the kittens are healthy and seek medical attention if any abnormalities are observed.
