I. Initial Signs of Estrus in Rabbits

1. The rabbit's vulva will appear pink, although this may not be as noticeable if the rabbit has been on hormone medications for an extended period.

2. The rabbit's temperament may become irritable and easily angered.

3. There may be instances of rabbits mounting each other.

4. A decrease in appetite may occur, along with possible digging behavior.

II. Estrus MidStage in Rabbits

Principle: The corpus luteum completely regresses – a new follicle rapidly develops – the blood supply to the reproductive tract increases – the cervix fully opens.

1. The vulva becomes red and swollen.

2. If you reach under the doe's back, she will raise her tail.

3. The doe is willing to accept mating, and some does may even mount the buck.

This phase is the best time for breeding does.

III. Estrus LateStage in Rabbits

Principle: A new corpus luteum begins to form – estrogen secretion decreases – the reproductive tract congestion subsides – the cervix gradually closes – estrus symptoms disappear – the corpus luteum forms – progesterone is secreted. If the rabbit does not become pregnant, the corpus luteum will gradually regress, leading to the next cycle.

1. The vulva's redness and swelling diminish.

2. Vaginal mucus secretion decreases.

3. The doe is unwilling to mate with the buck.

4. Appetite returns to normal.

IV. Optimal Breeding Practices for Does

1. Ideal Breeding Times:

Spring and autumn seasons are best for breeding in the early morning or evening. In summer, it's preferable to do so during the quietest night hours, while in winter, the midday sun is ideal. Overall, breeding rabbits should be conducted in a warm, sheltered, and quiet location. During this time, avoid having strangers围观 or any disturbances.

2. Preparations Before Mating:

Remove the feeding bowls from the buck's cage, clean it thoroughly, and then place the doe in the buck's cage for mating. The reason for placing the doe in the buck's cage rather than the other way around is that the buck feels secure and comfortable in his own space. When brought to the doe's cage, the buck may feel intrigued and spend a long time sniffing around without mounting.

3. Managing the Breeding Frequency of Bucks:

It's best to allow the buck to breed once a day, with a possible continuation for 2 to 3 days followed by a day of rest; or the buck can be bred once in the morning and once in the afternoon, with a day of rest following each breeding day. For bucks that have not bred in a long time or are to be retired from breeding, it's advisable to trial them a few times before formal breeding arrangements. After mating, gently pat the doe's bottom twice and promptly return her to her original location.
