What is commonly referred to as ear mites in cats is something many pet owners are familiar with. If a cat's ears aren't regularly cleaned, they can easily fall victim to ear mites.
What Are Cat Ear Mites?
Cat ear mites are a type of parasitic mite that resides on the surface of a cat's external ear canal skin, causing irritation and leading to an external parasitic disease. These mites, by living on the skin surface of the ear canal, can trigger inflammation, which may then lead to bacterial infections. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the middle and inner ear, and even to the brain, causing serious systemic symptoms. Ear mites can produce earwax and cause an overgrowth of the ear canal's epidermis. Generally, a healthy cat's ears should be clean, appearing white with a rosy tint. If you notice your cat's ears have a buildup of dirt and it returns after cleaning, there's a high chance it's suffering from ear mites.
How to Treat Cat Ear Mites
Firstly, it's important to isolate the cat, as ear mites are highly contagious, much like ringworm. Next, you should clean your cat's ears daily using an ear cleaning solution. In most cases, the condition can resolve within 1 to 2 weeks.
Steps for Cleaning the Ear Canal
Secure the cat first. You might consider using a cat harness or a special cat bag to prevent the cat from struggling and potentially scratching you during the cleaning process.
Once the cat is secure, gently wipe the ear with a cotton swab or pad soaked in baby oil to soften any ear mite debris. After the mites are softened, use a clean cotton pad to wipe away the loosened dirt.
Next, apply a few drops of ear cleaning solution into the cat's ear canal and gently massage the base of the ear. Allow the solution to mix with the debris, then release the cat. It will shake its head to expel the dirt.
Finally, once the cat has shaken out the dirt, use a clean cotton swab to wipe away any remaining debris from the ear canal.
