Part 1: Why Does a Pudding Hamster Bite?

1. Unfamiliarity with New Environment and Owners

Newly acquired pudding hamsters may bite out of fear and anxiety as they adjust to their new surroundings and human companions. To help them settle in, avoid disturbing them or overfeeding them in the first three days after they arrive. Allow the hamster to acclimate to its environment at its own pace, and gradually introduce yourself to avoid startling it and triggering a bite.

2. Improper Handling Techniques

Many pet owners are bitten while holding their hamsters. This is a common occurrence due to the hamsters' natural timidity and the perception of humans as enormous creatures capable of causing them harm. Avoid reaching from behind to grab your hamster, as this can cause panic. Always be gentle to prevent accidental bites.

3. Strong Territorial Instincts

As solitary animals, hamsters have a strong sense of territory. If you've handled another hamster without washing your hands first, your pudding hamster might bite out of recognition of the unfamiliar scent.

4. Strong Odors on Your Hands

With a keen sense of smell, hamsters might mistake your hand for food if it carries the scent of food, leading to a gentle nibble to confirm its identity. Additionally, if you've applied strongly scented hand cream, the hamster might become suspicious and bite out of defense.

Part 2: What to Do If a Pudding Hamster Bites You?

While it's rare for pet hamsters to carry rabies, there is an extremely small risk of transmission if a hamster is bitten by a rabid dog. However, such cases are not documented. Despite the low risk of rabies, hamsters do carry bacteria in their mouths, so here's how to handle a bite:

1. If the bite is minor and there's no broken skin or swelling, no treatment is necessary.

2. If the bite breaks the skin and causes bleeding, gently squeeze out the blood, then wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. Afterward, disinfect the wound with iodine or alcohol, and avoid bandaging it.

3. For more severe bites with significant bleeding, seek medical attention promptly. If the wound is longer than 0.3mm, consult a doctor about the need for a tetanus shot.

Bonding with your pudding hamster takes time and patience. Don't rush the process when you first bring your new pet home. Remember, hamsters are nocturnal creatures that need their daytime rest undisturbed. Frequent interruptions to their sleep can lead to bites, so be mindful of their needs!
