Deadly Mistakes in Rabbit Care: Avoid These to Save Liv
Incorrect care methods can lead to sudden death in rabbits.
1. Depriving rabbits of water. There is a misconception circulating online that rabbits do not need water, suggesting that providing them with ample fruits and vegetables is sufficient to meet their hydration needs. This belief is not only unscientific but also dangerous. Rabbits require water, and they need a considerable amount of it. Ensuring they have access to clean, potable water at all times is crucial, as dehydration can easily lead to fatal consequences. It's important to note that rabbits can drink water without experiencing diarrhea or illness. In fact, overfeeding them with fruits and vegetables before their digestive systems are fully developed, such as in rabbits younger than one month, can cause them to become ill.
2. Frequent bathing or hugging rabbits. Rabbits are naturally shy and can be easily frightened, as evidenced by instances of rabbits being scared to death in real life. Rabbits do not enjoy being held or bathed, so frequent bathing, hugging, or intentionally startling them is not advisable. Rabbits are clean animals and often clean themselves; they do not require baths unless necessary. If a specific area of the rabbit is particularly dirty, it's essential to investigate whether there is an underlying health issue. If so, seek veterinary care promptly. If not, it may simply be that the rabbit's fur has come into contact with dirt, in which case, clean the affected area and dry the rabbit's fur thoroughly without bathing it.
3. Inappropriate housing. Some rabbit owners, unwilling to tolerate the animal's scent, choose to keep rabbits in unsuitable locations such as balconies or basements. These environments, either exposed to intense sunlight or dark and damp, are detrimental to the rabbit's health, weakening their immune systems and increasing the risk of illness and death.
