How Can Pet Owners Help Their Dogs Get Used to Grooming?

1. Avoid Forceful Brushing

When a dog's fur gets caught in a brush, it can feel pain (which equals an unpleasant experience). If the pet owner applies too much pressure during grooming, the dog may develop a negative association with the act of being brushed, thinking it's something particularly讨厌.

2. Familiarize Your Dog with the Brush

Before your dog can get accustomed to grooming, it's important to first get them used to the brush itself. For instance, hold the brush in your hand and let your dog see it while you feed them dog food. Gradually, start to gently touch your dog's back with the back of the brush while continuing to offer treats.

3. Distract with Toys

At first, it can be helpful to engage your dog with toys (like a treatdispensing puzzle toy that captures their interest). While your dog is focused on playing, you can slowly begin to try brushing them with a brush with bristles that are less irritating.

If your dog starts to show discomfort with the brush, act as if you're unaware and say to the dog, "I didn't do anything!" Then, discreetly hide the brush so the dog can't see it. The secret to getting your dog used to grooming is a bit of deception, but make sure your dog doesn't feel tricked.

This phase is not about the grooming itself; it's about getting your dog to accept the idea of grooming. Even if you only manage to brush a small part of their body, you're on the right track.
