Causes:

The primary causes are chronic endometritis or the decay and decomposition of a fetus that has died inside the uterus, leading to an overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria within the uterus.

Primary Symptoms:

The affected dog may exhibit a lack of energy, reduced appetite, or even refusal to eat, along with a preference for drinking. Vomiting, a fever that rises above 39.5°C, increased respiratory rate, abdominal swelling, and pain upon palpation are common. The dog may also have a copious discharge of thick, yellowgreen, foulsmelling pus from the vulva, accompanied by swelling of the external genitalia. If left untreated, this condition can potentially progress to septicemia.

Treatment:

The treatment principle focuses on eliminating inflammation and draining abscesses. Standard treatment methods include:

(1) Antibiotic therapy to combat infection and correct electrolyte balance. The recommended dose is intramuscular gentamicin at 10,000 international units per kilogram of body weight, intravenous 5% glucose saline 250500ml, vitamin C 0.5g, hydrocortisone 5060mg, ATP 20mg, coenzyme A 50 units, and amoxicillin (or cefalexin) 11.5g, administered once or twice daily for 34 days.

(2) Use 0.1% Leforvirin solution or 0.1% potassium permanganate solution for uterine lavage and antiinflammatory treatment.

(3) Traditional Chinese medicine therapy. The treatment principle is to clear heat, remove dampness, and promote blood circulation to resolve stasis. The herbal formula includes 10g of motherwort, 3g of anemarrhena, and 3g of phellodendron. This is decocted for oral intake, with one dose per day for 34 days.

(4) In confirmed cases, warm physiological saline can be used to lavage the uterus. After most of the pus has been removed, the uterus should be repeatedly lavaged with 0.1% Leforvirin solution or 0.1% potassium permanganate solution to thoroughly remove uterine exudates. Then, inject penicillin and streptomycin, and perform this treatment every other day. Additionally, intravenous fluid therapy, broadspectrum antibiotics, metronidazole, and Chinese patent medicine such as Jinchong Chongji or Fuyan Kang oral solution should be administered in conjunction until the dog recovers.
