What Types of Lovebirds Are There? How to Distinguish Between Male and Female Lovebirds?

1. Pearl Lovebirds: Pearl Lovebirds are one of the popular varieties of Lovebirds. These birds have feathers predominantly in a deep gray hue, adorned with a pattern of regular pearllike spots. Both male and female Pearl Lovebirds sport a grayishyellow crest on their heads and have faint red circles on their cheeks. They also display yellow spots on their wings and a pearl pattern on their bellies. To differentiate between the genders, note that female Pearl Lovebirds have a row of yellowish spots on their underwings, which is absent in males.

2. Albinism Lovebirds: These birds are predominantly white with yellowish hues, especially in the females. The females tend to have a paler overall color and a slight yellow tinge in their crest and tail feathers. Their faces are marked by prominent cheek patches, with brighter pink in males and more of an orangered in females. Adult males typically lack spots on the inner wings, while females have a row of yellowish spots.

3. Original Grey Lovebirds: The Original Grey Lovebirds have a deep gray body with large, distinct white spots on their wing feathers, gray feet, and a yellow crest. It's quite easy to tell the difference between the genders. Adult males usually have a striking yellow head and bright red cheek patches, whereas females have more subdued head colors and less vibrant cheek patches.

4. Black Bull Lovebirds: These birds are mostly gray and black in color.

5. Whiteface Lovebirds: Whiteface Lovebirds are entirely white, with no red cheek patches on their faces. They are generally more expensive than other Lovebird varieties. Identifying the sex of Whiteface Lovebirds can be challenging and often requires a card test or a physical examination of their vent area. Typically, females have a wider vent area.
