Spontaneous Feline Cystitis Diagnosis & Treatment Metho
Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC) Causes
01. Deficient Bladder Wall
The inner lining of the bladder is composed of a mucous layer made of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which serves to protect the delicate cells of the bladder wall. This is crucial because urine contains high concentrations of irritants that can otherwise stimulate these cells. In cats with FIC, it appears that this GAG layer is defective and insufficient. This can damage the underlying cells (transitional epithelial cells of the bladder) and may lead to the formation of ulcers and areas of irritation or inflammation.
02. Neurogenic Inflammation
Local irritation of the bladder wall can stimulate the nerves within it, sometimes even through stimulation from the brain. Stimulating these nerves can lead to the release of chemicals known as neurotransmitters, which can exacerbate local inflammation and pain.
03. Stress Response
