Symptoms & Treatment of Canine Pulmonary Heart Disease
At the early stages of pulmonary heart disease in dogs, respiratory infections often manifest. Treatment can involve intravenous administration of cephalosporin drugs. It's crucial to carefully monitor the fluid intake during the infusion process. Concurrently, antiasthmatic and coughsuppressing medications, such as F5 and Pimobendan, should be used to complement the therapy.
For dogs with severe pulmonary heart disease, particularly those suffering from pulmonary edema, auscultation typically reveals distinct wet rales and bubbling sounds. In such cases, intramuscular injections of cephalosporin drugs are recommended.
Alternatively, you can administer a combination of 0.1 mL/kg, 0.2 mL/kg, and 0.1 mL/kg of Sustamol, Dexamethasone, and Furosemide intramuscularly, along with oral Pimobendan. Additionally, consider using rapidacting heartsaving pills for the dog. It's advisable to provide the dog with oxygen therapy and monitor its heart rate and blood oxygen saturation levels. Treatment courses should last for 7 to 10 days.
Pulmonary heart disease is a common ailment in older dogs. Once a dog reaches the age of 8, it's important to schedule regular health checkups, focusing on blood tests, blood chemistry, and chest Xrays. If there are any changes in the dog's biochemical heart indicators or signs of heart enlargement on the Xray, it should be taken very seriously. During temperature fluctuations, it's essential to prevent respiratory infections in dogs, even minor colds should be treated promptly to avoid the development of chronic respiratory diseases and secondary pulmonary heart disease.
