Under normal circumstances, a dog's spine can naturally arch and dip, but it is quite rare for a puppy to be born with a curved back. However, if a dog is in pain and consistently maintains an arched back posture, this is an abnormal condition.

The primary cause of a dog arching its back is often due to intervertebral disc herniation in the thoracic and lumbar spine, or pain from abdominal organs.

Intervertebral disc herniation is more common in dogs with long bodies and short legs, such as Pekingese and Shih Tzu, with an increased incidence after the age of five. Clinical cases have also shown that shortlegged Poodles with long bodies are susceptible. This condition tends to recur, and it is particularly prevalent in shortlegged dogs that primarily consume meat, liver, and sausages. An imbalance in mineral ratios in their diet can lead to poor skeletal development, exacerbating the risk of intervertebral disc herniation and other joint diseases.

To support bone health, it's beneficial to include more soy products, seaweed soups, and carrots in your dog's diet. Regular sun exposure can also aid in the absorption of calcium, helping to strengthen your pet's bones.

For conservative treatment of intervertebral disc issues, longterm administration of joint supplements can enhance joint flexibility, alleviate pain, and combat arthritis, thereby improving the dog's mobility. Additionally, managing the dog's weight can reduce the strain on its joints.

Abdominal organ pain can also be a cause for a dog to arch its back and resist touch. This can be due to conditions such as intussusception, intestinal foreign bodies, perforation, peritonitis, severe intestinal parasites, abdominal tumors, or cancer.

In this particular case, the dog is exhibiting vomiting and a lack of energy, suggesting a possible gastrointestinal illness. An ultrasound of the abdomen can be conducted to investigate the condition.

Treatment for peritonitis involves promptly controlling infection and using antibiotics, such as penicillin, streptomycin, cephalosporins, enrofloxacin, and sulfadiazine sodium. Medications like dexamethasone and prednisolone can be used in conjunction. It's crucial to stop the leakage of fluid, which can be achieved by administering 10% calcium gluconate solution (2030ml), a mixture of 5% calcium chloride solution (510ml) with 25% glucose solution (4060ml) via intravenous injection. If there is a significant amount of fluid, abdominal puncture can be performed to drain the accumulated fluid, and 10ml of 0.25%0.5% procaine penicillin can be injected. Furthermore, a daily intravenous injection of 2030ml of 50% glucose, 0.51.0g of vitamin C, and 5ml of 40% Urotropine can help alleviate symptoms and prevent sepsis. Additional treatments may include strengthening the heart and diuretics, tailored to the specific needs of the case.
