Cats with Trichomoniasis: Symptoms & Treatment Insights
Section 1: What is Trichomoniasis?
Under a microscope, Trichomonas vaginalis moves rapidly and erratically.
It is particularly common for cats under the age of 2 to contract the infection, with the average age of onset being around 9 months.
Section 2: Symptoms of Feline Trichomoniasis
1. Cats may become emaciated and listless, with their fur looking dry and unkempt. They may suffer from diarrhea, frequent defecation, and may expel blood or mucus. Their tails and anal areas can become severely soiled, emitting an unpleasant odor.
2. The conjunctiva of the eyes may appear pale, and there may be signs of dryness and dehydration in the nose.
3. Biopsies of the large intestine often reveal inflammation, as well as mild to severe infiltration of lymphocytes and plasma cells.
Section 3: Transmission Routes of Feline Trichomoniasis
Trichomonas vaginalis can be transmitted directly through contact or fecaloral routes. This includes sharing cat litter, bedding, bowls, brushes, and can also lead to mothertocub transmission.
Section 4: Factors Increasing the Incidence of Feline Trichomoniasis Infections
1. Poor sanitation in cat shelters.
2. Overcrowding with too many cats in a confined space.
3. Feeding raw or unclean food.
4. Lack of regular deworming treatments.
Section 5: Treatment Methods for Feline Trichomoniasis
1. Deworming: Administer deworming medication to the cat.
2. Metronidazole: Provide metronidazole to the cat. Avoid using excessive doses of metronidazole, as there is no evidence to suggest that higher doses are more effective and they may increase the risk of neurotoxicity.
Signs of neurotoxicity, such as drowsiness, decreased appetite, and seizures, can occur with high doses of metronidazole. These symptoms typically resolve within 12 weeks after discontinuing the medication. If neurotoxic symptoms are detected, the medication should be stopped immediately.
3. Enhance Nutrition: During treatment, discontinue canned food and some wet foods, and opt for easily digestible or highfiber diets.
After one week of medication, a recheck is necessary to confirm recovery.
