When Do Puppies Lose Their Baby Teeth?

The process of puppy tooth eruption typically begins around the 20th day of their life. By the age of 4 to 6 weeks, the deciduous incisors should be fully in place. Around two months old, all the puppy teeth should have grown in, appearing white, slender, and pointed. The first deciduous incisors are usually replaced between the ages of 2 to 4 months. After approximately 8 months, the puppy should have all their permanent teeth.

Signs of Teething

It's common to see puppies gnawing on anything they can see as soon as they come home, often leaving a mess around the house.

Even after scolding, they may not stop, as teething can cause some discomfort and itching. This makes it hard for them to resist the urge to chew on hard objects.

Most of the time, you won't see the teeth fall out, as many are swallowed by the puppy.

Precautions Before Teething

After weaning at around 4 to 6 weeks, it's important to feed your puppy softened dog food soaked in milk or warm water.

As your puppy approaches 3 months old and starts to teethe, switch from milkbased foods to solid dog food.

Keep valuable items out of reach to prevent your puppy from damaging them with their teeth.

To deter your puppy from chewing on furniture and other items, provide them with toys and chew treats. Patience is key when training them to chew on toys. Start by placing the toys near furniture, and gradually move them to the desired location as your puppy begins to chew on them.

Precautions After Teething

After the puppy has finished teething, in addition to feeding them dog food, offer them chew toys to help with proper dental wear.

Regularly brush your puppy's teeth.

You can also feed them specially formulated dental dog food.

Regularly check your puppy's teeth for tartar and calculus buildup, and if any issues are detected, consult a veterinarian for appropriate treatment to prevent complications and severe consequences.
