Major Rabbit Breeds and Types Overview
At present, the American Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes approximately 45 purebred rabbit breeds. These breeds are primarily categorized based on their purpose into three main types: meat rabbits, wool rabbits, and pet rabbits. In terms of size, they are further divided into small rabbits (weighing around 8 to 16 pounds), medium rabbits (about 4.5 to 8 pounds), and dwarf rabbits (typically under 4.5 pounds). Additionally, rabbits can be classified by their fur type (longhaired or shorthaired), ear type (erect or droopy), and other distinctive features.
Common Rabbit Types:
1. Dutch Dwarf Rabbit
The Dutch Dwarf Rabbit weighs approximately 3 to 3.5 pounds and is considered a small rabbit, making it a popular choice as a pet. This breed is known for being the most delicate among the dwarf rabbits, having been recognized by the ARBA in 1980. The Dutch Dwarf Rabbit has a round face and body, a flat nose, short front legs, and is commonly found in colors such as black and white, coffee and white, and shades of dark or light brown.
2. Longhaired Dutch Dwarf Rabbit
Also known as the American Fuzzy Lop, the Longhaired Dutch Dwarf Rabbit is a small rabbit weighing between 3.5 to 4 pounds and is a popular pet choice. This relatively new breed was developed from Dutch Lops and some crossbreeds of longhaired Lops, gaining ARBA recognition in 1985. The Longhaired Dutch Dwarf Rabbit shares many features with the shorthaired variety but boasts longer fur.
3. Jersey Longhaired Rabbit
The Jersey Longhaired Rabbit is a small rabbit weighing less than 3.5 pounds and is also a pet breed. Breeding began in 1981, and the breed was recognized by the ARBA in 1988. This breed is particularly small, with a broad and round head, short ears, and fur that is at least 1.5 inches long.
4. Lion Rabbit
The Lion Rabbit is a small pet rabbit weighing between 3.25 to 4 pounds. Originating from Belgium, this European breed has not yet been recognized by the ARBA. They resemble the dwarf rabbits, with a round, flatnosed body, but have longer front legs and a "V"shaped mane of long fur that gives them a lionlike appearance. Their ears are upright and triangular, and their fur is no longer than 3 inches.
5. Dutch Dwarf Rabbit
The Dutch Dwarf Rabbit is one of the smallest rabbit breeds, weighing less than 2.5 pounds, and is a popular pet choice. They have short, upright ears, a round face, flat nose, and short fur without any earlobes.
6. Dutch Longeared Rabbit
The Dutch Longeared Rabbit is a smaller variety within the mediumsized rabbit category, weighing between 3.5 to 5.5 pounds and is a beloved pet. This ancient breed hails from the Netherlands and is known for its unique color distribution and clear fur demarcation. The Dutch Longeared Rabbit has a round body, upright ears, and short, lustrous fur.
