Dealing with a Dog Overfed: Quick Solutions!
Causes: The inflammation of the stomach is primarily caused by a sudden change in diet, excessive consumption of bone and meat products, which are difficult to digest. This leads to an overabundance of stomach contents, irritating the gastrointestinal mucosa, weakening the gastrointestinal barrier function, and resulting in systemic and central nervous system dysfunction.
Symptoms: Before falling ill, the dog exhibits normal appetite and other behaviors. However, after overeating, the dog may initially vomit, with foamlike mucus, food particles, or stomach acid. Sometimes, the vomit may contain blood or stringy fluid. The dog's thirst increases, and constipation may occur initially, followed by diarrhea, with feces mixed with mucus or blood. The dog's body temperature rises, and it may lose its appetite, leading to complete loss of appetite. After drinking a lot of water, vomiting may worsen, causing the eyes to sink in, leading to dehydration and weight loss. In severe cases, the dog may experience fecal incontinence, cold extremities, and eventually fall into a coma, seizing, and ultimately dying.
Treatment: The treatment focuses on regulating the acidbase balance, enhancing gastrointestinal motility, eliminating stomach contents, improving digestion and stomach health, reducing inflammation, and preventing secondary infections.
Food and Water Restrictions: For mild gastritis, it is recommended to withhold food from the dog for one day and limit water intake to prevent vomiting after drinking. After that, provide the dog with small, frequent meals that are easy to digest.
Enhancing Gastrointestinal Motility and Digestion: To eliminate excessive acid residues in the stomach, administer 24 milliliters of Congdan Su (an injection containing ingredients like Scutellaria baicalensis, Forsythia suspensa, and Gentiana scabra) or an injection of bile extract. Follow this with 1550 milliliters of castor oil orally, and take a small amount of baking soda or lactic acid bacteria to improve digestion and appetite.
Controlling Vomiting, Preventing Dehydration, Correcting Electrolyte Imbalance, and Maintaining AcidBase Balance: 1. Administer 20 milligrams of diphenhydramine hydrochloride intramuscularly or subcutaneously, or 10 milligrams of metoclopramide hydrochloride injection intramuscularly. 2. Use injectable normal saline, 5% glucose, and amino acids in combination, supplemented with vitamin C, vitamin B1, and vitamin B6, and then administer it intravenously once or twice a day.
Antibacterial and Antifungal, Antidiarrheal, and Preventing Secondary Infections: Administer 25 milligrams of gentamicin intramuscularly or 0.3 milliliters of a combination of gentamicin sulfate and neomycin sulfate injection per kilogram of body weight; this should be done once or twice a day for 12 days. Alternatively, oral "Canine Disease Oral Solution," which contains gentamicin, trimethoprim, analgin, and ribavirin, can be given; or 0.5 milliliters of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride injection can be administered intramuscularly.
Deworming and Boosting Immune System: Due to the possibility of consuming undercooked bones, chicken, and duck offal, which may contain parasites or eggs, it is recommended to administer 1020 milligrams of praziquantel per kilogram of body weight orally; or 0.2 milligrams of ivermectin per kilogram of body weight can be administered subcutaneously.
