Section 1: The Pharmacological Effects of Ivermectin

Ivermectin is a novel broadspectrum antibacterial and antiparasitic medication that boasts high efficacy and low toxicity. It effectively combats a wide range of parasites both within and outside the rabbit's body. The mechanism of action of Ivermectin involves a highaffinity binding to the glutamategated chloride channels in the neurons and muscle cells of invertebrates. This increases the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions, leading to hyperpolarization of the nerve or muscle cells. It also enhances the release of γaminobutyric acid (GABA) from the cells, opens the chloride channels, and strengthens the permeability of Cl, thereby disrupting the transmission of nerve signals. This ultimately leads to paralysis of the nerves and a weakening of the muscle cells, facilitating the elimination of the parasites.

Section 2: Indications for Ivermectin

Ivermectin is suitable for the prevention and treatment of internal and external parasites in rabbits. This includes mange mites, ear mites, tapeworms, various nematodes, and hookworms, among others. It also provides excellent relief for symptoms such as rough hair, hair loss, decreased appetite, redness around the ears, and otitis externa caused by these parasites.

Usage and Dosage: The drug is administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly at a dose of 0.2ml per kilogram of body weight for rabbits (always use the dosage strictly as directed on the label). One application of the medication can prevent disease for over two months. Generally, the drug is administered once every six months to once a year.

Section 3: Precautions for Using Deworming Medications

There are specific deworming medications for rabbits, and it is crucial not to use human deworming medications on rabbits.

If the deworming medication comes in tablet form, the owner should grind the tablet into a powder, set it aside, and then prepare a 2ml or 5ml syringe. Pour the powder into the syringe and slowly push the plunger in to avoid blowing out the powder. After pushing the powder through, draw in no more than 1ml of water, shake well, and inject it into the rabbit's side between the incisors!

That concludes our introduction to deworming medications for rabbits by Oxygen Pet Doctor. Many people believe there is no need to deworm rabbits, but we hope pet owners will truly understand the importance of deworming. Particularly, rabbits around three months old require thorough deworming treatments, as neglecting this could lead to the loss of your beloved pet.
