Year-Round Flea & Worming for Cats: Winter Care Too!
Today, let's delve into the importance of deworming!
Parasites come in a vast array of types, sizes, and shapes.
Below are some of the most common parasites found in cats and dogs.
Fleas:
Fleas are a very common pest in pets, and there is no single method to completely eradicate them. Once you spot a single flea on your furry friend, there could potentially be 100 more lurking nearby.
They have a rather intricate life cycle, consisting of four stages: flea eggs, larvae, pupae, and adult fleas. Despite their inability to survive for long in extremely cold temperatures, adult fleas can still be found on many cats and dogs throughout the winter.
Ticks:
Ticks are temporary parasites on the skin of many vertebrates and can cause symptoms such as skin allergies, ulcers, and inflammation. If left untreated, tick infections can lead to tickborne diseases, which can be severe and even fatal.
Although the peak season for ticks is from April to October, some ticks are quite coldresistant. Once they latch onto cats and dogs, they won't let go of the opportunity to feed on blood.
Heartworms (Internal):
Heartworm disease is caused by parasites that primarily reside in the pulmonary and cardiac blood vessels, transmitted by mosquitoes.
While it's not the peak season for mosquitoes during winter, they can still be found in homes when temperatures rise above 5 degrees Celsius. Therefore, we should not ignore the risk.
Intestinal Parasites (Internal):
Like heartworms, these parasites live inside cats and dogs, and winter's cold temperatures have little impact on them. This is why regular deworming in the winter is a must for our beloved pets!
Below, we'll introduce several safe and common external deworming medications that new pet parents can jot down. This is a very safe external dewormer suitable for all breeds of dogs and cats. The insecticide in the medication only targets arthropods like ticks and fleas, so it poses no harm to humans or pets.
Furalene External Deworming Drops
Furalene's unique high lipophilicity allows it to spread across the entire body surface within 24 hours of application, ensuring its effectiveness can last for over a month, even after a bath.
Usage Frequency: Use monthly, without interruption throughout the year.
(Available for pets over 8 weeks old)
Furalene External Deworming Spray
Different from the drops, this spray has a lower age restriction and can be used on pregnant and lactating female dogs and cats, as well as puppies as young as 2 days old and kittens over 7 weeks old. It can eliminate lice, fleas, ear mites, and ticks, among others.
Usage Frequency: Use once a month.
Pfizer's Revolution
This product is primarily used to treat and prevent infections in dogs and cats caused by roundworms, hookworms, mange mites, fleas, and lice, as well as to prevent heartworm disease in cats.
Available in different sizes based on the pet's weight, it can be used on pregnant, lactating dogs and cats, as well as puppies and kittens as young as 6 weeks old, without any side effects.
Usage Frequency: Use once a month for 28 days.
While summer deworming is about treating parasites, winter deworming is all about prevention! So, in addition to using deworming medications, pet parents should also take proper precautions to prevent parasites. In reality, parasites are not as scary as they seem and are quite easy to prevent. As long as we deworm and take daily protective measures throughout the year, we have nothing to worry about!
