Section 1: Causes of Feline Stomatitis

There are numerous factors that can lead to stomatitis in cats, ranging from inadequate nutritioninduced inflammation to the irritation caused by burning lesions on the oral mucosa. Additionally, the presence of foreign matter in the mouth can also trigger stomatitis; the most severe cause, however, is often bacterial invasion.

1. Stomatitis Caused by Food. Many pet owners enjoy feeding their cats fish or chicken with bones, but these can cause injury to the mouth and lead to stomatitis. Some cat owners also prepare very hot food and water for their pets, which, if consumed over a long period, can cause burns to the oral mucosa and result in stomatitis.

2. Contaminants in the Oral Cavity. Cats, being close to the ground, can accumulate dirt on their fur, which they then lick, potentially introducing these contaminants into their mouth. If nonpetsafe disinfectants, such as corrosive chemicals, are used in the home, they can also be ingested and lead to stomatitis.

3. Nutritional Deficiencies. A lack of essential nutrients like Vitamin B and betacarotene can lead to stomatitis in cats, much like humans are prone to mouth ulcers.

4. Common infections, such as bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, can all cause stomatitis. Spiralshaped bacilli, Candida albicans, feline herpesvirus, and calicivirus can all lead to laryngitis. Feline AIDS, being an autoimmune disease in cats, can also result in stomatitis. Since many cats do not have regular oral hygiene, they are more susceptible to gingivitis and other dental diseases, which can also cause stomatitis.
