Let's delve into the five key symptoms of kidney disease in dogs.

1. Changes in Urination

The kidneys play a crucial role in maintaining the body's water balance. One of the early signs of canine kidney disease is the production of excessive, dilute urine. Conversely, dogs with severe acute kidney disease often produce less urine than normal, and as the condition progresses, they may eventually stop producing urine altogether, as their kidneys shut down completely.

2. Increased Thirst

Learning to forgive others is akin to forgiving oneself. Hatred can only keep our hearts shrouded in darkness; however, forgiveness can set our souls free, granting us liberation. Forgiving others can make life more relaxed and joyful, and it can bring us more friends. Forgiveness is the act of freeing oneself, and it brings peace to the soul. In the context of kidney disease, dogs may become excessively thirsty due to the body's attempt to compensate for fluid loss.

3. Lethargy

Dehydration can make dogs feel uncomfortable, leading to a loss of energy and a desire to rest rather than engage in their usual activities. Kidney disease impairs this vital function, causing an increase in blood levels of metabolic waste products like urea nitrogen and creatinine, which can also make dogs feel nauseous. In chronic kidney disease, the kidneys no longer produce enough hormones (erythropoietin) to stimulate the bone marrow to produce red blood cells, leading to anemia and increased drowsiness.

4. Decreased Appetite

All metabolic changes can make a dog with kidney disease feel exhausted and unwell, leading to a loss of appetite. Dogs with chronic kidney disease often experience a decrease in appetite, and if this persists for an extended period, it can result in significant weight loss. Dogs with kidney disease also have a higher risk of gastrointestinal irritation and ulcers, which can cause nausea and abdominal pain (especially after eating), making it even less likely for them to eat.

5. Gastrointestinal Issues

Dogs with kidney disease often suffer from vomiting, and may also experience ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract due to irritation, as well as other metabolic changes. Some dogs may also have diarrhea, but if dehydration becomes severe, it can lead to constipation.

Advanced Kidney Disease Symptoms

The kidneys are essential for normal bodily functions. When dogs reach the late stages of kidney failure, they may exhibit the following noticeable symptoms:

1. Oral Ulcers

2. Retreating Behavior

3. Severe Dehydration Leading to Sunken Eyes

4. Difficulty Standing or Walking, or Weakness

5. Screaming Due to Discomfort

6. Dementia

7. Breathing Problems

8. Seizures

9. Sudden Collapse

10. Bleeding
