Section 1: Characteristics of Rabbit Enteritis

1. The course of rabbit enteritis typically lasts between 1 to 7 days, with acute cases potentially leading to death within 10 hours. Key symptoms of rabbit enteritis include a lack of appetite, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of these symptoms. The feces may be loose and soft, sometimes green and malodorous, or possibly creamy, white, or yellow in consistency. Affected rabbits become very weak, with dry, dull fur and reduced activity levels. They often curl up in a corner due to abdominal pain.

2. To prevent rabbit enteritis, pet owners should avoid feeding their rabbits frozen food and ensure they do not drink cold water. It's also crucial to maintain the quality of the rabbit's diet, especially during the hot summer months when food and feed can spoil or mold easily. Always inspect the feed for any abnormalities before feeding, and replace it if necessary.

3. Treatment for rabbit enteritis should be tailored to the specific condition of the affected rabbit.

Section 2: Treatment Methods for Rabbit Enteritis

The primary approach to treating rabbit enteritis is to focus on inflammation reduction, antibacterial therapy, fluid replacement, and detoxification, with additional measures such as gastrointestinal cleansing, antidiarrheal treatment, cardiac support, and pain relief. Targeted treatment should be based on the underlying cause and symptoms.

1. Gastrointestinal Cleansing and Detoxification

Administer a mild laxative to clear harmful contents from the rabbit's gastrointestinal tract. For example, you can give 3 to 5 grams of Epsom salt mixed with an appropriate amount of water.

2. Protecting the Mucous Membrane and Reducing Toxin Absorption

Strengthen the rabbit's gastrointestinal mucous membrane to prevent toxin absorption. Mix 1 to 2 grams of activated carbon with a suitable amount of starch paste and feed it to the rabbit.

3. Antibacterial Inflammation Control and Prevention of Putrefaction and Fermentation

Act promptly to stop the fermentation of contents in the rabbit's gastrointestinal tract. Use antibacterial drugs like复方新诺明 (combinational new sulfamethoxazole) for inflammation control, and then introduce probiotics after 5 to 6 hours to reduce abnormal fermentation.

4. Fluid Replacement to Prevent Dehydration

If the rabbit shows signs of dehydration, provide fluid replacement therapy. You can give the rabbit a mixture of glucose and vitamin C to replenish fluids.

Warning from Oxygen Pet Doctor:
