Section 1: Causes of Canine Cystitis

1. Infection with pathogenic microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Proteus, among others.

2. Spread of inflammation from adjacent organs, such as nephritis, ureteritis, prostatitis, and cystitis. Particularly, when a female dog has vulvitis or endometritis, the inflammation can easily spread to the bladder, leading to cystitis.

3. Mechanical damage, such as catheter injury or bladder stones, can stimulate the mucous membrane and cause inflammation.

Section 2: Clinical Symptoms of Canine Cystitis

1. The hallmark symptom is painful, frequent urination. Affected dogs may urinate frequently, adopt a urination posture, but only release a small amount of urine each time, or dribble continuously (dribbling). They may also appear restless and in pain.

2. In severe cases, due to swelling of the bladder neck mucosa or spasms of the bladder sphincter, urinary retention can occur. The dog may be in pain and whine.

3. Chronic cystitis in dogs has symptoms similar to acute cystitis but are less severe and have a longer duration.

Section 3: Prevention and Treatment Measures for Canine Cystitis

The treatment principle for canine cystitis is to inhibit bacterial growth, eliminate inflammation, and provide symptomatic treatment. Key points include:

1. Improve feeding management, ensure adequate rest, and feed a diet that is nonirritating, nutritious, and easy to digest. It is advisable to limit highprotein foods.

2. Use disinfectants or astringents to flush the bladder. First, use a catheter to drain the accumulated urine from the bladder, then rinse with lukewarm saltwater repeatedly. Afterward, flush with a medicated solution. Solutions like 0.05% potassium permanganate and 0.1% iodine tincture can be used for disinfection. For astringency, consider 1%3% boric acid solution or 1%2% alum solution.

3. In severe cases, after flushing the bladder, inject 800,000 to 1,200,000 units of penicillin (dissolved in 50 to 100 milliliters of distilled water) into the bladder, and administer penicillin, streptomycin, or other antibiotics systemically.

4. Consider the use of urinary tract disinfectants.

5. Prevent microbial invasion and infection. Ensure proper disinfection and sterility during catheterization. Promptly treat other urinary tract diseases to prevent spread.

While canine cystitis can be treated, the process can be lengthy and quite painful for the dog. Therefore, it's crucial to follow the preventive measures mentioned by Weiwei Animal Hospital. Pet owners must show extra care and attention to their pets to keep them free from such disturbances. Should your dog exhibit the symptoms described, don't hesitate to bring them to a veterinary clinic for prompt treatment and examination!
