One: Types of Rabbit Enteritis

1. Acute Rabbit Enteritis: The incubation period for acute rabbit enteritis typically ranges from 12 to 36 hours, highlighting its rapid onset. Once affected, rabbits with this type of enteritis often exhibit symptoms such as loose stools, soft feces, prolapse, lethargy, bloating, discharge in feces, difficulty breathing, and pronounced abdominal movements, all of which are key indicators of acute rabbit enteritis.

2. Chronic Rabbit Enteritis:

The primary symptoms of chronic rabbit enteritis include longterm indigestion in affected rabbits, or recurrent episodes of constipation or soft stools. The feces may contain undigested hay, and the rabbit may drink less water, have a decreased appetite, produce fewer feces, experience abdominal pain, be listless, and have an increased respiratory rate.

Two: Diagnosis and Treatment of Rabbit Enteritis

Generally, the type of enteritis a rabbit has can be determined by its symptoms, and Xrays can be used for a scientific diagnosis. Rabbits with enteritis often die due to a恶性 cycle caused by bloating, which can be clearly observed through Xrays. If a rabbit's bloating is severe, physical decompression or removal of decayed food from the gastrointestinal tract may be necessary. Regardless of the type of enteritis, rabbits need probiotics and antibiotics to alleviate the burden on their intestines, along with adequate hydration and a diet of easily digestible foods.

The specific treatment includes seven key points: identifying the cause, stopping diarrhea, decompressing, antiinflammatory, restoring gut flora, rehydrating, and nourishing. The detailed treatment plan is as follows:

1. First, determine the specific cause of the rabbit's enteritis and implement targeted treatment. For example, if it's a viral enteritis, antiviral treatment is required; for parasitic infections, deworming and antibacterial treatment; for fungal enteritis, antifungal medications like ivermectin; for enteritis caused by ingestion of foreign objects, stop feeding inappropriate foods, change the diet, or remove the object surgically; for cold and dampnessinduced enteritis, provide warmth and promote intestinal motility; and for enteritis caused by antibiotics, replenish the gut flora.

2. Additionally, treat each specific symptom with targeted measures. For instance, if a rabbit has diarrhea, medications like attapulgite can be used to relieve symptoms. For acute enteritisrelated diarrhea, injectable treatments for cats may be necessary.

3. To address bloating, use dimeticone for gas relief and gently massage the rabbit's abdomen to promote intestinal motility and gas expulsion.

4. Help the rabbit restore its gut flora by supplementing with a large amount of probiotics and feeding prebiotics to increase probiotic colonization.

Dr. Oxygen Pet Tips: After the rabbit's enteritis has healed, pet owners should not become complacent. For a long time after recovery, the rabbit's intestinal mucosa is particularly fragile. Therefore, even after the enteritis has been cured, owners should continue to feed their rabbits small, frequent meals, supplement probiotics and prebiotics, and prevent overeating to avoid recurrence of the condition.
