Penguin Fish Gathering and Sinking: What's Happening?
Understanding the Reasons Behind Your Parrotfish's Behavior
1. Sudden Startle
It's not uncommon for newly introduced parrotfish to bunch together at the bottom of the tank, refusing to swim or eat. This is due to their naturally timid nature. When they're not yet familiar with their surroundings, they tend to hide at the bottom to minimize their visibility. This behavior is usually temporary and will normalize as they gradually acclimate to their new environment. Additionally, if there's too much noise, it can scare them, causing them to seek refuge at the bottom. To help them feel secure, it's best to keep the tank in a quieter, dimly lit area of the room.
2. Low Water Temperature
Another reason for your parrotfish to gather at the bottom and stop swimming could be the water temperature. These fish thrive in temperatures ranging from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. If the water is consistently below 25 degrees, it can weaken their immune system, leading to a lack of movement and下沉 behavior. In such cases, you should use a heater to adjust the water temperature to between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius. Once the fish have adapted to this warmer environment, typically within a week, you can gradually lower the temperature back to the ideal range for their growth.
3. Intestinal Inflammation
If only a few of your parrotfish are showing this behavior, it might be due to intestinal inflammation. This condition often arises from unclean food or overeating, which can lead to food accumulation and subsequent bacterial growth in the intestines. If this is the issue, you should immediately change the tank water and treat the fish with a medication like terramycin or gentamicin by bathing them in the new water. Additionally, adding vitamins to the water can boost their immune system. Once they recover, they should resume their normal behavior.
Understanding why your parrotfish are bunching at the bottom and not moving is crucial. As a responsible owner, you can then take appropriate action to address the issue. Remember, timely intervention can make a significant difference in their health and wellbeing.
