One: How Many Times Can a Hamster Have Puppies in Its Lifetime?

On average, hamsters reach sexual maturity around three months of age and can then give birth to litters two to four times a year. However, their lifespan typically spans only one to two years, which means they can have between four and eight litters in their lifetime. Healthy hamsters may have up to five to eight pups in a single birth, with some rare cases seeing as many as thirteen. Conversely, if the hamster's health is compromised or the male's sperm quality is poor, the litter size might be as small as one to three pups.

Nonetheless, it's generally advised not to let a hamster have more than four litters, as excessive breeding can place a significant strain on the mother's body and may impact the pups' health. Additionally, after giving birth, it's recommended to separate the mother from the father for feeding purposes for two to three months to allow the mother ample time to recover.

Two: Care Measures During the Hamster Breeding Season

The breeding season is crucial for the health of hamsters and the success of their reproduction. Therefore, certain care measures should be taken.

1. Pay special attention to the mother hamster during pregnancy. She may become more timid and sensitive, with increased aggression and a preference for her nest. During this time, it's important to remove the male from the cage and ensure the mother has ample food and water to meet her and her developing pups' nutritional needs. Offer highprotein treats like mealworms, cheese, and egg whites, along with plenty of water and calcium.

2. As the pregnancy progresses, the mother's belly will grow larger, and she may become less mobile. Provide her with a cozy, quiet, clean, and private space to feel secure and comfortable. Also, maintain the cleanliness of the cage to prevent the hamster from contracting skin diseases or other illnesses.

3. Before the mother gives birth, place some straw or towels in the cage to allow her to deliver her pups there. To prevent the pups from being harmed or bitten by the mother, keep her food and water close to the nest so she doesn't have to leave it for too long.

4. After the pups are born, promptly clean the nest, replace the towels with fresh ones, and ensure both the pups and the mother have access to enough food and water.

In summary, hamsters are adorable and gentle pets, but when breeding, it's essential to carefully observe and analyze their physical and psychological conditions. Take the right steps to protect the health of both the hamsters and their pups. Throughout the breeding process, make sure the hamsters have ample food, water, and space, and provide them with plenty of love and care during pregnancy and after giving birth to ensure the healthy growth of the pups.
