Common Reasons for Red Parrotfish Turning White

1. Low Water Temperature: As tropical fish, red parrotfish generally thrive in warmer waters. If the water in their tank is too cold, or if the temperature fluctuates dramatically due to improper water changes, the fish may turn white as a result of stress.

2. Water Quality Issues: If a red parrotfish retreats to the corners of the tank while its body turns white, it might indicate poor water quality. High levels of ammonia or chlorine can hinder the fish's oxygen absorption, leading to a loss of color.

3. Diet Problems: The pigmentation in parrotfish is maintained through their diet. Many pet stores add red pigments to their food, but if the owner fails to continue this practice, the fish may gradually lose its color.

4. White Spot Disease: Just like humans, fish can fall ill. White spot disease is a common ailment in red parrotfish, characterized by white spots or frostlike formations on the fish's body.

How to Treat Red Parrotfish That Have Turned White

In cases where water temperature and quality issues are causing the discoloration, the owner should change the tank water regularly, about every 35 days. It's crucial to maintain a temperature difference of no more than 2 degrees during water changes. Ensuring a stable and comfortable environment for the affected fish will help them regain their vibrant red color in a few days.

For discoloration caused by diet issues, the owner should add a small amount of red pigment to the fish's food (not too much) or increase the feeding of live bait like brine shrimp, red worms, or bread worms to help maintain the fish's red hue.

In instances where the white coloration is due to illness, the owner should treat the affected parrotfish with a 10% saltwater bath. This should be done four to five times a day, each session lasting about ten minutes. Additionally, sprinkling a small amount of antibiotic powder in the tank can boost the fish's immune system, aiding in a quicker recovery.
