When keeping a male and female guinea pig together in a cage, especially if they are over four months old and exhibit mating behaviors, it's quite common for them to become pregnant swiftly.

Once pregnant, the female guinea pig typically shows several signs: an increase in appetite, a decrease in activity levels, moodiness, an expanding belly, and a preference for napping. As the pregnancy progresses, her appetite will soar, often doubling her daily food intake. 1. Separate the Cages Promptly

Upon confirming pregnancy, it's crucial to move the mother to a separate cage. This is because, while the mother will stop cycling, the male will continue to be fertile and may attempt to mate, potentially leading to conflicts and even miscarriage.

2. Maintain Hygiene

The new cage should be placed in a dry, warm, and sheltered area with minimal wind. Clean the cage daily, removing feces and soiled food to ensure a clean environment. Make the cage cozy with soft bedding and provide fresh food and water to nourish the mother.

3. Supplement Nutrition Appropriately

A guinea pig litter can range from one to seven pups, which can be quite taxing on the mother. Therefore, it's important to supplement her diet with highquality pellets and hay, offering a small amount of alfalfa hay daily. However, be cautious not to overfeed to prevent obesity in the mother or oversized pups, which could lead to complications.

4. Encourage Moderate Exercise

Pregnant guinea pigs may become more sedentary, but it's still essential to ensure they get some exercise. You can let her out to play for a while each day, or she can remain active in the cage. Just avoid vigorous activities.
