1. The Importance of Scent Markers for Cats

Cats are creatures of habit when it comes to their bathroom routines. They rely heavily on scent to identify their preferred elimination spots. However, when they move to a new home, the absence of their familiar scent in the litter box can be confusing. Without this scent cue, cats may struggle to recognize the litter box as their designated elimination area.

One effective solution is to bring the cat's old litter box home. This is particularly useful for cats purchased in person, as it allows for a seamless transition. By continuing to use the litter box that carries the cat's familiar scent, the adjustment to the new environment can be much smoother.

For cats purchased from a distance, where the buyer and seller never meet facetoface and the cat is transported by a third party, bringing the litter box may seem impractical. In such cases, an alternative approach is recommended.

2. Preventing Cats from Establishing Their Own Scent Markers

What if the cat has never used a litter box before? How can you encourage it to start? The answer lies in limiting the cat's movement—by confining it in a cage.

With a limited space, the cage can prevent the cat from eliminating anywhere in the home. By placing the litter box inside the cage and keeping the cat confined for a few days, you can force the cat to use the litter box. Cats naturally prefer to defecate in soft areas and cover their waste, so with only one litter box available, the cat will have no choice but to use it.

Once the cat uses the litter box for the first time, the familiar scent will make it easier for the cat to continue using it in the future. As the saying goes, "Once you get past the first hurdle, the rest becomes much easier!" Other possible reasons for a cat not using the litter box include:

1. Inappropriate Litter Box Placement: Cats need a quiet, secure place to relieve themselves. If the litter box is placed in a hightraffic area, the cat may feel unsafe and reluctant to use it. After all, no one wants to be disturbed while doing their business.

2. Disliked Litter Type: There's a common joke about cats and litter: "My cat doesn't like it." And it's true that some cats may not appreciate certain types of litter. It's best to consult with the seller about the type of litter the cat was using before. Ideally, use the same type of litter, or if you want to switch, start with a small amount and try it out. If the cat dislikes it, you'll need to reconsider.

3. Avoid Sharing Litter Boxes: If there's already another cat in the home, the new cat may feel like an intruder in the established territory. Therefore, the cat may be hesitant to use the "original owner's" litter box. Each cat should have its own litter box to avoid any territorial disputes.
